Hey guys,

Im getting ready to take my Instrument written exam soon and my question is if I pass and get an OK score and want to take it again, do I need another endorsement from an instructor?

This question has come up before at the school I work at, which also has a testing center. The ruling was that you can re-take the test as long as you bring both your first test (with a passing score) and your endorsement.

I have a question for you. If you pass, why would you want to retake? Is there a minimum score you're trying to achieve(besides the obvious passing 70%)? Pass is pass with the FAA, just be prepared to answer the questions you missed on your Oral portion of your checkride. Not worth an extra $90 and the chance you could do worse(it is possible), just study the mistakes

I never had less than 90% but still I can't say that my oral exams were easier because of that. I have many friends that scored 70%-72%and their checkrides looked exactly the same as mine....I wouldn't waste that $90 just to look better in front of the DPE...he will just see if you passed the test...

I wish my writtens were $90, they are up to $100 now.

When I took my IR checkride, my examiner just looked over it to make sure it was a passing score, and set it off to the side.

I have heard of some examiners being extra critical of people with low scores. Just because a 72% is passing for the certificate/rating, it doesn't always look the best to the examiner. Generally from what I've seen, if you get a 80% of higher, you should be in good shape. From 70-80%, while maybe not a retake but just besure you can answer those questions really well. Although, some examiners could care less about what you got, even if it was 70%.

dont do a retake.

an 86% is 16 points worth of wasted effort. the exam is pass or fail. theres only 4 examiners in the entire nation that care what you got on the written.

"whoa, you only got a 72%?"
"yeah, i didnt know my school requires it done before the end of the course, so i only had one night to study. my instructor and i went over the stuff i got wrong though"

Yeah, don't bother with a retake... All the examiners do is look at it to make sure it is above 70% and that it has not expired....

Waste of time and money. Study hard the first time if you are worried about the score. No reason to ever get below a 90% on an FAA exam. There are just too many resources avaiable.
