Depends which position you are applying for. Cathay hires Second Officers and Direct Entry First Officers. Emirates hires First Officers and Direct Entry Captains. The hour requirements are different for all four positions. Generally speaking the lowest hourly competitive times would be for Cathay SO, EK FO, Cathay DEFO, and then EK Captain in that order. Cathay's interview pass rate for the DEFO position is something like 1 in 8. Perhaps a Cathay guy could elaborate on that. EK FO pass rate is somewhere around 35 to 40 % right now. The DE Captain rate is much lower. Cathay's technical quetions are more difficult.

Thanks, Typhoon. I'm not applying to either in the very near future (not eligible yet!) but definitely looking to that direction as a possible career goal. I didn't realize EK FO position may be easier than CX FO. Do you know if they're hiring U.S. regional guys or is it mostly guys with time in heavy jets? do t-prop drivers have a chance?

EK hires guys with regional time. CX hires guys with regional time, but mostly into SO spots. EK has not started hiring guys with just turboprop time yet, but that is a rumor. Probably heavy turboprop time first though ( C-130, P-3, ATR 72, etc ).
I didn't realize EK might consider folks with just turboprop time. I'm a former C-130 driver, so I'll take a look at the site and start reading up on PPrune.
I agree that it's an interesting (and good) idea, but in the interest of full disclosure I must admit that I have selfish motives for thinking it's good!
Do you guys know if the FOs or SOs at these carriers (CX, EK, EVA, KAL, etc.) are type rated (at the company's expense) when they're hired? or do they get an SIC type?
(sorry if it's a stupid question, I have no clue.)

Hey Typhoon,
Does EK require a training contract or any type of committment as a contigency on being hired? If so, can you elaborate?

EK requires a 3 year bond that is pro-ratable on a monthly basis. It is typically $36,000. The time starts at end of training.

EK gives you an SIC type on a UAE license. It's a paperwork exercise to convert it to an SIC type on your FAA certificate. The PIC license is more difficult to convert over.
