The latest route was just announced as being Beijing, starting mid summer (northern hemisphere) to be in place for the olympics. Initially PVG will drop back to three a week so there will be no net gain in routes, but come November PVG is back to at least five, ZBAA keeps going and YVR looks like it might be upped to to five by then (just flew in from AKL with not a seat to spare). So possibly some decent hiring mid 2008.
Position: No friggin' idea, but we're making really good time!

Hey Koru, do your flight attendants still wear those pretty green hats? I partied with a crew on a LAX layover many moons ago. Without a doubt, the high-point of my career

Unfortunately. . . no. They are now sporting something reminiscent of Aeroflot from the 60's. Oddly it looks great on the people who are in shape, and terrible on those who are not. I understand however that they are revamping the current uniform, and at any rate, if you provide great service then who cares about what you wear;
Kudos to those who have kept Air NZ. . . well. . . Air NZ. Good on ya'.
Yes, as much as people like to complain about airline management I would have to say that the people here appear to doing thing's right.
It's not an off the chart expansion like the ME airlines, at least one of which I fear will cease to exist when the inevitable drop in the price of oil comes along (it happens every time), but our orders are reasonable, the routes are being chosen very carefully and fiscal management is very good (1/4 million dollar profits for an airline our size is hard to argue with). The media people are also, in my opinion at least, doing a very good job with keeping bums on seats.
ALPA is in negotiations at the moment and, from what I understand at least, thing's are pretty cordial. The Freedom air merger is also coming along rather well, which is great as those types of thing's normally leave real animosity between the varying pilot groups.
Of course not everybody is happy and I must admit to being generally positive, in my general out look, but from my vantage point and from what I hear around the traps people are pretty happy. Even the old guy's are warming up to the management, which is something to say on it's own if you know anything about the history of Air NZ management/pilot relations.
Tweet, mate, you guy's are missing a great spring. I hope you're not anywhere on the east coast that is in the deep freeze. Let us know when you are down next (if it's going to be before retirement).
Koru, do you mean Vancouver to Beijing? I certainly hope so because a large group from Seattle will be going to the Olympics to cheer on a certain young swimmer. How frequent are the flights? Do you know anything about fares? Will it go straight to Beijing or stop over somewhere? Thanks.
Hey Koru, Thanks for the Air NZ update...I sent you a PM. I will be finalizing my permanent residency with the embassy/immigration in D.C. next month, from that point I have 12 months to enter NZ to establish my residency. Getting close now!! Say hey to P.
Cheers,
JD

The Beijing flight is Auckland direct, sorry. AC does it direct out of YVR.
Vancouver is doing very well (we were at max T/O out of YVR last night and full on the way up). If you really wanted to get a taste of the service you could do YVR-AKL-ZBAA, but that might be a bit of a haul. A nice stop in Godzone is worth the trip though.
Jet fleet expansion into regional New Zealand
************************************************** *********
Air New Zealand has announced it is considering Hamilton , Dunedin , Invercargill and Palmerston North for trials of 737 domestic jet services, to provide regional customers with more daily capacity. The new services are being made possible by increases to the 737 fleet, up from 14 to a possible 18.
The final decision on the cities to receive 6 month trials will be made soon, and will be based on customer demand and the level of support that can be gained from the regions. The new jet services will begin mid-year.
