My friend is a check airman their...He says the company, which is owned by Continental Airlines is receiving zerro time new pilots from Spain and charging them $50,000, yes fifty big ones to fly the E190 and the 737NG then they get rid of them and bring a new batch of nubies every year. They seldom hire their own countrymen pay sucks and only a few days off a month so living in Panama is a must. A lot of South West age sixty guys are their now so upgrade from with in is almost imposible. The South West guys are trated ok and are allowed to comute, according to my buddy...he can't wait to get the hell outa their.
Are those Spaniards hired on the right seat for 50K USD. Do you know if they are hiring on the left seat? and what kind of times are looking for? What is the Interview Process??? Thanx for the info...
Thats about all I know, I remember another friend was very upset because he found out they were not hiring anymore right seaters because Copa kept bringing more student pilots.
A flew down there for a while with the TACA regional operator so have a number of friends in the area. Any of the guy's from Aeroperlas (TACA Regional) who wanted to were able to go to COPA; four guy's I know personally. They are all either being upgraded or are looking at upgrades onto the ERJ out of the right seat of the NG, so I know not of what your friend is speaking of (this is fresh news as of yesterday). The money isn't great, just north of $3000 per month for an NG FO, but pretty reasonable for that neck of the woods. I'll find out what they are paying for left seat on the ERJ.
It was quite difficult to get working down there as a non-Panamanian you know. For me it was because I was a check captain. Perhaps they are short due to a lot of guy's taking jobs in India, but that information on the Spanish is interesting; frankly, I can't see why Spanish kid's would do it when there are good, paying jet jobs in Europe.
They sent an HR rep to the Purdue Career Fair in October. They were actively hiring for NG FOs, with 500tt!!! Scary.
The really disturbing part was she said they hire Panamanian pilots with around 250tt, and that she didn't believe they were completely honest with those hours, either. I don't know if that is true or not, but the whole operation seems pretty shady to me.
Hello there fellas!!!!!!!!!!
As far as I know, CM had stoped hiring expats. But, they are supposed to start hiring back again in January.
So, we'll see about that.
Cheers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thats the standard from Mexico all the way down to Argentina. If you really want to be terrified, the Mexican DGAC program calls for 180 hours, 10 multi, and 20 hours instrument training (no Instrument rating needed) and BAM you get to fly an airbus.

We don't actually own Copa anymore. We owned 51% of it back in 2003 or so I believe, followed by a partial sale in 2006 and earlier this year sold the rest of our shares. Our influence is still there though, noted by all the (almost) brand new NG's and the a/c livery. Now that CO's leaving Skyteam for Star Copa will probably follow..
No j/sing I believe. There's a wealth of information on this forum already on this issue.. in fact, a thread with the same exact title still active. Just use the search function.
