Tim,

I apologise sincerely for the hit and run nature of my postings. The problem I have with your postings is not that they are positive or balanced but that you actively 'sell' the company. You have appointed yourself as the oracle of all things EK North America.

I believe that Emirates inc (Dubai et al) has many pluses but also many negatives. What doesn't? My concern is that when you hit serious problems in Dubai they are fundamentally life changing and that if you are going to sell the company you have to sell the lot. Particularly as you take great pains to state that all things you state are fair and balanced.

All your points about legitimate gripes are true. The ability to steal someones pension indicates real problems with the nature of workplace responsibility in your country. Even though this is the case the US does have fundamental protections not allowed in the UAE. It can be a very dangerous place if you fall foul of the authorities in any of the many spheres of life.

Your responsibility as a salesman to your countrymen, a sort of duty of care, must be to provide an account of all aspects of life. That's why I was interested in how you dealt with Spike who had five kids but still turned up for interview in Dubai. There is no way he could have made it stick and lucky for him he didn't get a job.

See you at work.

Mrs Murray's little boy Brian lied about the hotel standards at Emirates Airlines, they are not ALL 4 and 5 star hotels. There are some ****ty hotels in the system. Some are just barely decent three stars. The hotel in DUS for example, though clean enough, has absolulely no services. No internet, no gym. I will not list them all.

Little Boy Brian also lied about the Corporate treatment of pilots being equivalent to the treatment accorded "Vice Presidents". This is not just stretching the truth, it is an outright lie.

If you think truthfulness is an indication of someone who doesn't like positive people, you need your head read.

Never let the facts get in the way of a good argument. Take a look at the 4 Star Dusseldorf Hotel and tell me again it has no services.

Default EK That bad?

Typhoon, Drifter and BusCanuck...

I've been very interested reading your posts. I wanted to add my story, see if you had any comment.

I went to an Air,Inc Job Fair in LA last March, met both Brian Murray and a lady from Flight Crew Recruitment (an Ozzie, I think). They made a very good presentation, were very cordial, and had probably the best airline booth at the fair. I spoke with both of them, both over coffee and later at their booth, and they gave me the big sell on EK. I was intrigued, and everything sounded really good. I was impressed overall with the operation, and if I was single, I would probably seriously look into EK and DXB. But, I'm married with 2 kids to a Southern California valley girl, and I'm stuck here. My wife flipped when I even mentioned DXB, so EK was out. Murray even told me as much, when I described my wife, but I was strongly encouraged to come to DXB and interview. I decided after my wife's strong opposition not to bother, as it would be a waste of EK's time and mine. But, in talking with Murray, I never got the impression that he was misrepresenting either EK or DXB. He appeared to be rather straightforward, and genuinely wanted to recruit good pilots for EK. I think his experience at US was so bad, he was excited about turning over a new leaf at EK, and his rose-colored glasses are normal for guys who have been thru what many 'legacy' pilots in the US have been thru.

Is that a fair assumption?

Anyway, good thread; let me know your thoughts.

And Bus Canuck---are you ****ed the 'Canes won the Cup?

TP,

You are 'da man. I have appreciated all of the positive posts and in my opinion, well balanced. The DUS hotel a dump? Yeah, it looks like it. Hey Delta has stayed in the Mainz River Hilton almost 20 years. Don't ever look under the bed!

I too, met Brian at an ATL job fair. He stated how he felt about EK, and did not pull any punches about Dubai and the expat life. Very straight forward briefing. Hated to see him get into a "tiff" over on pprune, but when one is thrown under the bus for stating what he feels, sometimes rationality takes a back seat.

Hey B757200ER,

What you've been told is correct. You can't come here without wife support. My family dynamic is similar to yours, but wifey was totally into the move. I have considered leaving here twice (because of delayed upgrades) and the wife talked me out of it both times. Wife happy, everyone happy.

We really like our life in Dubai, but it's an aquired taste - you either like it or you don't. Being from the West Coast as you are, is even harder. It's virtually half-way around the world and difficult to get home positive travel, never mind stand-by.

There's nothing wrong with the hotels. Probably a step up from my last job. The expense allowance is a rip-off, but no big deal. It's difficult for me to comment on your experinces with Brian. I thought posing as someone else and praising himself was pathetic, in the true sense of the word. The "concierge" service he bragged about was a bit irratating. The last 3 hotel deals EK announced offer "concierge" service to Captain's only. When you are a 3++ year F/O who has been lied to and delayed on Command, despite a high level of experience, you don't need a DEC gloating about his package. Anyway, the best true advice you'd get about such a move is talking to trusted friends at EK. Failing that, on these forums, Typhoon Pilot does a good job of being balanced.

Now as for hockey...well it'd be nice to see the Cup in Canada, but hey, I'm a Canuck's fan. It wasn't easy cheering for the Oilers. (Had if been the Flames, I'd of cheered for the 'Canes) Good game though and cool to be watching it in Dubai albeit at 0400!

Good luck with your career.

Having worked for other airlines and now UPS...what's wrong with the DUS hotel? If you think UPS has better you're sadly mistaken.

Bummer your wife does not want to go. I used to fly out of Bahrain, I was single at the time, but spent allot of time down south in DXB as well. Life for married couples was excellent; heck, you even get your own area in a restaurant. In DXB and Bahrain there are heaps of activities, about a half million other ex-pats, and nice beaches that a So-Cal girl would even like (much safer then Hermosa or Venice to boot). We have guy's from ANZ that have gone and all are pretty happy with their decision. Many westerners I meet have this ingrained perception of the gulf which is unfortunately, and unfairly incorrect. That said, spouses sometimes can't erase that preconceived notion from their mind and end up having an easy time looking for and finding all those bad things about the place, and end up depressed and unhappy. Not good for the marriage. Most families I have known that have left have said the kids hated going in the first place, but really hated it when they had to leave.

Anyone traveling to Dusseldorf needs to check in the Relaxa hotel near DUS. Been there plenty of times, very clean and pleasant enviroment with very good service, the breakfast buffet is off the hook.
