if you start traveling overseas more, it will be customary for hotels, stores etc. to ask for a passport number.. i felt the same way as you at first.. but it's not really a big concern.. fill it out

Even more uneasing is when staying at hotels in former Soviet Block Countries and in Asia. Many hotels want you to surrender your passport while a guest at their establishment. They will return your passport after your bill is settled. So message for ferry pilots, where your expenses are supposedly prepaid??? Beware!!!

If you are concerned: type in your passport # but change one of the digits to another digit or leave one out. Correct your "mistake" at a later point and when you feel your application actually may lead to an interview or a job.
