I have now started to apply for positions with overseas operators and have found most want you to list your passport number when applying online. I don't feel comfortable with giving this info because I feel it is like giving out my SS#.

What is your opinion?

Go ahead and give it. No one can steal your identity with your passport number. It is a randomly assigned number for that day the passport was made. Since your picture is on the original, can not be used for fraud purposes either.

You obviously never been outside the US where almost every country ask for your passport number when you fill up their custom cards.

Yes, I've completed many custom forms when entering both US and foreign ports of entry as military and civilian. I feel those government forms are more secure than the online employment forms requesting personal info such as my passport number or social security number.

Radar, it is an information you are just going to have to give if you want the job, simple as that. My best recommendation when looking for jobs abroad is to forget what is logical in the states, foreign companies have their own logic. Good luck

Dont you give your SS # to companies when applying in the US? I would be more concerned with that than your passport number. As Dominican says, to apply for companies overseas, you can either give the number and maybe get a job, or not give the number and not be considered.

Any number that is linked to my personal info and especially my birth cert. worries me. My wife had a problem with identity theft years ago and it was not fun trying to straighten that out.

Thanks! I realize that the foreign employment is a different ball game. I guess if I want to be considered for employment I will have to hope for the best as far as ID security is concerned.

No, I haven't given my SS# online. Of course I've submitted my SS# as needed on hard copy applications and handed over to HR depts. I guess I'll have to suck it up and not worry about the passport number....thanks!

I understand your concern over ID theft, I had a problem with it too. Spent alot of time getting straightened out. I had the same question a few years back and the National Passprt Center told me that the number is a random number that is assigned on the day the passport was made. There is a security tag in your passport that has all the info, not your passport number.
