Default Emirates Pilot Roadshows

Looks like they have a few scheduled upcoming over the next week. What kind of information is presented? Are they viewed as a valuable way of networking and getting an interview? Is it worth my efforts as an FO to get out to one if I have an interest in working there or would it just be a waste of time? Any info is much appreciated!!

If you are really interested in Emirates they are worth your time. You will watch a pretty slick recruitment video about Emirates and life in Dubai. They will also have a presentation by an HR type and a recruitment pilot. It's a good way to get noticed- think of it as a 'pre interview'. Keep your eyes open and ask questions. Emirates is not a bad deal, but be aware that not all that glitters is gold....

Emirates currently places a very strong preference on current Boeing/Airbus guys and are particularly recruiting for right seat positions on the A380. They are also recruiting for 777 slots but in smaller numbers as the growth on that fleet has slowed down. There is no specific prohibition at EK for hiring RJ only pilots (they've hired many in the past) but I think an RJ only guy wouldn't be an Emirates recruiter's main pick. The fact that Emirates is doing road shows again after a long pause indicates to me that their hiring pool is getting shallow again. My read: if you are desperate to work for Emirates then a road show is a good idea. If you are just gathering information/curious/or RJ only then attend a show only if convenient in your life.

I went to one years ago and I must say it is well done. The airline itself and the city of Dubai are absolutely brilliant marketers of their product and you will see it at these road shows.

However……..

Be VERY aware as Buford said, not all that glitters is gold. It is a FAR different airline once you are hired and see the inside and deal with what you have to deal with. No amount of words can completely describe what you're about to step into. Not meant to scare of put-off but…..

I would caution you to COMPLETELY understand what you're getting into before jumping ship from your current position. Of course if you have no current position then I suppose it's a good deal.

There are so many perks at that airline but….. there's a reason they have to offer all those perks!!

At the end of the day, it really comes down to where your passport is from as to whether you will like it here or use it as a stepping stone to something else.

Also, I've heard they have quite a few US pilots submitting their resignation to go back as the US Airline industry starts what appears to be a long large and long lasting hiring spree.

What are the big downfalls? What are the different FARs? What are the main reasons for the US pilots resigning?

Dubai isn't for everyone. Living outside of the US isn't for everyone. Life is different here in Dubai. It takes a big mental adjustment to live in the Middle East, especially if you are bringing your family with you. I've not had this issue at work, but I've had friends here run into some issues of "anti-Americanism" during training, both in the sim and on the line. There is no union here to negotiate your contract or protect your job. You can be fired at anytime, with or without cause! Cost of living is going up in Dubai, especially rent prices. The big reason people are leaving......because they can! Dubai gets old after awhile. I give it a 5 or maybe 7 year shelf life before you start to lose your sanity or grip on reality. Same goes for the family.....it's easy for the Mrs to get used to having a maid, weekly spa days, wine parties with the other wives, etc..... It doesn't happen to everyone, but I hear enough pi$$ing and moaning from coworkers to know that it does happen.

As for FARs and work rules, they are very close to the new Part 117. Not much different actually. You fly brand new aircraft and very rarely have an MEL on anything affecting your decision to take the aircraft.

If you want to read more, go over to pprune and dig through all the posts.

This is old, but still pertinent. I've seen a lot of it first hand, and there have been many more articles published since.

The dark side of Dubai - Johann Hari - Commentators - The Independent

No union protection, you're a second rate citizen, freedom as you know it in this country doesn't exist (from a legal, religious, etc stand point).

I was drinking with a buddy (EK 777 capt) and his F/A's one night, and they all unanimously agreed that once you get past the glitz of the place, it's a very dirty, dark place with nothing much else to offer beyond shopping and opulence. Spent many months there myself, and have to agree.

Default March PSP

Gents,

Anyone Boeing rated from mid-March assessment got a call with a course date yet?

Also would it be reasonable to assume that, if EK doesn't send you a failure message one month after your medical check it means everything is ok and good to go?

Thanks for the help.

I'm not sure how you could say that, they have a robust motorsports community.

Stay FAR, FAR, away from this place. It was different post 2008. Pack up, and you'd be better off flying for a U.S. regional with a glass cockpit.

Stay AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
