I have a job offer in Nigeria for an oil company. Pay is great but i am concerned. Any one with any experience, Constructive suggestions please. Plan is to leave for a Major airline in the US as soon as they offer. Until then finding it hard to live on Food stamps.

No it is not safe...The corruption is at all levels, and you will see it first hand if you choose to fly there. You will definitely be a victim of petty crime and your chances of a violent crime encounters are increased. Not worth chasing the money, and remember you have no rights...(like Nigerians have any either)...It is my least favorite African country.

I don't like going there, but have to fly there every couple of months at my current job. We use a armed security company to escort us from airport to hotel. I don't leave hotel while on layover.

This was our standard procedure when we flew there. The company dropped the armed escort when we flew cargo. Lagos was very expensive also.

My current company just finished a 6 month contract down there and we used the exact procedure as you described. Yes, cost of living was also huge...our perdiems had to be more than doubled to cover it. I suspect we won't return for all the reasons described in this thread!

Man, so expensive. Amazing that to live there would cost you on par with living in Manhattan.

The reason for the high cost is you must eat in the hotel, the secure area and the hotel knows it... Yes the hotel with concertina wire around it. Sure it might be cheaper eating on the economy however i don't know anyone who did. Also, the armed guards escorted the hotel guests across the street to the beach and stayed with them...
Crews were nervous in the van from airport to hotel, if the van with armed guards, had to slow enroute...this slowing was viewed as a way to get the van off course. Slowing was due to staged car accidents...someone(s) laying in the road, or whatever. The van just plowed thru all!

I go here semi-regular with my non-aviation job. This is also the procedure.

If you are hired direct by an oil company (I assume one of the majors) they will usually have their own security and it shouldnt be a problem. You most likely will be staying on their own compound instead of a hotel, so usually secure and cost of living will be basically nil.

I wouldnt be as negative as some are saying. For the most part Nigerians are friendly (although somewhat devious when it comes to seperating you from your $$$), the problem is the bad elements of society are BAD!!

I would certainly ask for the full details from the hiring company, as well as talk to other pilots if possible to find out what they think.
