I do not think it is ego to expect at least an acknowledgement of an application. It is basic courtesy. It is not hard to set up an automated reply that leaves the applicant at least knowing their application was received.
I would say I heard back around 5-10% of the time...usually "0" response.

I have had about 20 jobs, 4 flying. I have applied to about 25 if my memory is somewhat rational. I only applied to jobs I thought I was qualified for.
Applying for 500 and interviewing for 2? Sounds like 498 were under qualified applications.
I am an average guy. The aviation job market worldwide is the best ever but you have to be qualified. If you are not qualified you have to work your way up, just as I, and most others, did. Flight instruction, Africa, etc. You gotta do what you gotta do.

The guy who applied for over 400 jobs...he only guy 2 replies...no interviews. He was qualified for all the jobs. It was in 1991, which was the worst hiring scenario for pilots since before the Wright brothers. You needed at least 1000 PIC -121 ME turbine to get hired as an FO at even the worst commuter, and at least 3500 TT...that was the competitive mins..

He can list all the licenses and types he wants. He not getting hired with those numbers. Even Air Macau will not give him a look these days.
I tried with all the companies that were listed a couple of years ago and I had three times the amount of TT and PIC. I heard back from exactly zero of them about 20 or so companies I applied with.
These guys pick up a couple of thousand hours and think every airline in Asia is gonna falling over themselves to hire them just because they have an A320 or an NG type.
I think the advise you gave him was sound, but 2800tt and no PIC or time in type isn't going to get you anywhere expect a regional job in the USA.
