Once hired, training is very similar to U.S.121 Carriers...Initial training is about 2-3 months long...The only difference is that there is no formal oral exam during the check ride...Then you have line training and your signed off...A350 is new so naturally it will go to very senior people in any seat...

A typical successful career at Qatar Airways can take you very far in the company but most people will become normal line Captains and those that don't pass the upgrade interview will remain First Officers forever on any equipment...The pay is the same on all fleets...Seniority has a different meaning here but the concept is similar to seniority at any airline...They also heavily evaluate training records when making decisions regarding fleet transfer or upgrades...if you get marginal grades on Evals and are even senior, you still may not get the equipment of your choice...if you have solid grades and are senior then you may get whatever you desire as long as there are openings in the desired equipment...Seniority does not determine everything in the end...Hope this helps,

thanks A330Pilot....Opportunities are there for everyone it seems. i believe the FOs over there are working hard constantly to ensure their success for command upgrade. So i guess you only have one chance and if you don't pass, then there will be no second attempt for the rest of your career in QR? Anyway, how is the passing rate for command upgrade?

As long as you fly well and know the aircraft, you will have no problems upgrading...Most pilots do upgrade while many don't...Upgrade is solely based on the upgrade interview and training records...If you don't pass the upgrade interview the first time then you will most likely be an FO for the remainder of your career at Qatar Airways...There are exceptions but very few...Flying as FO in Qatar Airways is still not a bad option as you earn a tax free package of $156,000 per year...To earn the same amount in the U.S net of taxes, you would have to earn $250,000...The only guys earning $250,000 per year in the U.S are legacy B777/747 Captains in their 25th year with their Legacy...So spending your entire career as an FO at Qatar Airways is still more lucrative than a U.S. Legacy job....Not to say that pilots at U.S legacies don't enjoy their jobs or pay but these are just some of the financial facts...

With all do respect, that is a false statement. If Qatar Airways was such a well paying gig, guys from ALL over the world, not just certain areas, would be lined up to work for them. This is FAR from the case. Legacy Captains on wide bodies are grossing well OVER 250K. Not to mention, they have a retirement match on top of their salary that pays 16% of their gross into a retirement account. It is my understanding that Qatar Airways barely even has any retirement program to speak of, if they even have one at all. Lets stay with reality. I'm sure the US legacies are far from perfect, but lets not bend facts about Qatar and their salary package being superior to any major in the US, let alone a legacy..(other than the fact it's tax free)

I interviewed there recently. I was not impressed at all. The interviewers were nice, the sim instructor from Sudan was a complete A......

I was told I passed everything. This coming from inside source. Hell the guy that interviewed me knew my friends where I work now.

Then I got the rejection letter. So I call my buddy, hey what's going on? He looks and says it all looks ok. But they need FO now on 787 not Captain.

Thanks QR for the 3 day venture in Doha. I'll say the one nice thing is the 750 Qatari they give us for perdiem. That was classy. I felt they wanted us but I think there priorities are misplaced with their interviews. I'll stay in China for now....

And the salary package they showed us looked nothing like what 330 was saying. And speaking to current friends there now on both types they are not anywhere even close.

Costs of living is quite expensive

Thumbs down

For the thousandth time, there is no seniority in Qatar Airways. Seniority here is like this: 1) Locals, 2) Connected people (we have several mafias over here), 3) everybody else. I have seen people with clean records denied upgrades/fleet changed for no reasons whatsoever (or flimsy reasons a la reporting 5 minutes late more than a year prior) but some guy with a warning letter and a reputation upgrades because he is a local/knows the right people, etc.

Once again, this is a job for people with no other options. If you have a steady job at home or one that you like, DON'T LEAVE IT TO COME HERE. This notion has been well covered in the past.

Absolutely. Come single, live like an RJ FO, and you will save money. Buy a nice car, live in the pearl, spend a little $ on stupid stuff like european watches and now you're saving much less scratch than you ought to be.

Speaking as a single guy, my QOL would be better in FL on $50K a year. Live near the water, drive a muscle car, and plenty of sun and scenery around, and on the cheap too. Oh, and you won't be living in a third world country? Nor would you be reading NOTAMs like "Flight below FL260 prohibited in Iraq/Libya/Modagishu FIR/etc due to the risk posed by dedicated anti-aircraft weaponry."

Senior U.S legacy Captains have been earning $250,000 as top pay for only the past 2-3 years...UAL top pay is $263 an hour for a 777/747 CA.. $263 an hour with 75 hour per month guarantee equates to $19725 per month...Which is an annual salary of $236,700...Pretax that is....Add another $7,000 per diem for the year..Now we are at $243,700 and add $38,992 for the 16% Retirement B Fund...So a top UAL Captain is earning $282,692..Now take out 38% in tax which you will pay sooner or later and you are left with $175,269 net.....That is pretty close to what a Qatar First Officer makes..Qatar FO's make an all inclusive package of $156,000 per year and 3 weeks salary per year towards retirement which is another $10,000... that takes the total FO package at $166,000 per year tax free...Also, we have 18,000 pilot applications on file so I don't think they are hurting for qualified pilots...
