That was a NJA aircraft. Some controllers will say the whole executive jet call when you only need to say execjet.

There are many times I will check in with our exec jet call sign and ATC will think that I say Citrus... I have no Idea how "exec jet" sounds like citrus, but it happens everytime I fly.

So I usually check in with "executive jet xxx" so they dont confuse it!

Or there are the times, many actually, that they call us eagle. I guess the abbreviations look similar on their strips.

Not really close:
Citrus = TRS
Eagle = EGF

I would think it has more to do with the controller favoring the predominate local traffic. The only operators that are even close to EJAxxx are:

Jetspeed (EJM) = EJM
EVA = EVA

Call signs are letters of agreement between the operator and ATC. The operator is generally allowed to pick any call sign they like provided no other operator holds that name. For instance, years ago, America West actually had a contest within its employee group to pick a call sign. The winner was "Cactus."

"Execjet" has been the call sign for Executive Jet/Netjets for quite some time. International letters of agreement are more difficult to arrange (Canada being an exception) which is the primary reason why NJA uses NXXXQS when operating internationally. Ironically, Netjets International actually holds the LOA for the call sign "Netjets." But because such a large percentage of NJI operations are international, NJI management decided long ago to use "Gulfstream NXXXQS" for all operations. Less confusion that way. But NJI has hung on to the LOA for the "Netjets" call sign.

Independence Air had a contest for a call sign too, and marketing won because they thought the full name would be best because then all of the people listening to the cockpit on UAL would hear the full name. Actually it was a good thing, I remember one of the other choices being "Bubbles" on the survey.
