Boeing,
I thought with your screen name and above posted flight times you may have been a Astar or ABX casualty. So I take it that you did have an internal rec though?
Lovely industry. That kind of experience, and you are rewarded with a salary of $35k. Note- this is not a cut on you - I congratulate you on your new position and wish you the best - but rather just a rant on this messed up industry. Don't you just love the aviation seniority system? Best of luck to you in these ugly times.
I agree with Nightsky, what ashame that our industry has come to what it is. I wish my crystal ball was working better and I would know where to focus my efforts in finding a new job, so that I could go my last 20 years without having to drop to the bottom of someone else's seniority list again. I am one of those ABX casualties. I have experience out the ying-yang and very few places to go, and even fewer that make any kind of money. It wouldn't be so tough if I was young and single, but that's not the case. I've considered the direct entry captain at Korean Air, but I can't imagine spending that much time on the other side of the globe away from my family. Bottom line; I'll do what I have to do to support my family. I just hope we all land on our feet.

Monetarily it would be a downgrade initially. Hopefully you would get the upgrade sooner than later to start making PIC wages. You certainly won't make as much as you did at ABX (that's a fact), but maybe you will enjoy the job more - far fewer night flights and a pretty good schedule. Plus, you might actually enjoy the airplane and the diverse flying - I hear the airplane is actually fun to fly and the ProLine 21 equipped P180s are a bit more advanced than the archaic DC9s and 8s (if you flew those). Good luck!

PIC wages? it'll take me 6 yrs as PIC at that place to match what I'm making now. Not to mention the loss of money that would be accrued over the years.

I do agree that fewer night flights will be nice. Driving to work at 2:00a.m. the other night, I thought to myself "I'm not going to miss this!!!!" It wasn't bad 15 years ago, but the night schedule really kicks your butt as you get older. I did fly both the DC-9 and the 8 from both seats for many years, but the last two years have been in the left seat of the 767. What a nice airplane. The level of automation was an eye opener coming from the Douglasaurus and I hope that it will ease my transition to the brand new technology I'll hopefully be flying for my new job. I will miss the Boeing's roomy flight deck (and the big paycheck). Thanks for the "Good luck".

Reason: typos caught too late

So, did you actually get on with Avantair? If so, good for you. I hear great things although no job is perfect. The quick upgrade helps in terms of pay. Sure, the flight deck in the Piaggio is tighter than the cavernous 767 flight deck, but you will probably feel like you are flying a sports car:
You can track airborne Avantair flights here and see where they have flown and laid over, etc over the last few days (click on the flight numbers). Friday and Sunday afternoons tend to show 30+ Piaggios flying simultaneously throughout the country - they do fly into some interesting/remote airports and you would get to know places like Aspen, Van Nuys, Napa, Jackson Hole, Scottsdale, Palm Beach, Las Vegas, Marthas Vineyard and Teterboro well:
Bill, No I haven't been hired by Avantair. Like many others on here, I am hopefully searching. I dusted off my logbooks and updated my resume' about 2 months ago, learned how to use a computer (sort of) and sent out resume's to whomever was hiring. So far, like I've heard on here before, "nothing but crickets". I guess getting a new job doesn't happen over night (like the rest of my current job). Thankfully, ABX's current problems allow some of us with seniority, to keep our jobs hopefully long enough to find new ones. DHL's transition from ABX/AStar to UPS will/should be slow, if it happens at all, allowing the breathing room while I search for new employment. I've thought about leaving aviation altogether, my the local Walmart isn't hiring any greeters right now:-)
