Josh,
He;s right. In the short run, those things are reliant. But over time you got to fly the plane.

That's why you're always better off flying a plane that makes no money. The best jobs are the ones where the plane just spends money. :-)

well yes and no.

Caterpillar has a flight department, but they don't need their own jets to sell earth moving equipment.. they're going to sell their products wether their executivess fly on company aircraft, charter or airlines.

But I see your point, I fly for a fractional, if my plane doesn't make money I don't have a job

Dude,
That works until a new boss comes in and says we don't need this expense. Then you are toast and looking for another job.

in today's "fiscal climate" if the asset, in this case an airplane, does not clearly facilitate business operations / close deals / etc , or directly earn money for the company (shareholders), kiss it goodbye. Just ask the Big-3 auto executives how that little deal worked out.

(Unless you fly for Rich Guy who owns a plane as basically a toy, and you are his pilot. But I would argue that is not in the truest sense of the word a "corporate flight department" it is "I fly for a rich guy").

The big three didn't close their flight departments because it wasn't supporting the operation/facilitating business deals/etc... they did it because rather than standing up and legitimately stating why they had a plane they folded to a bunch of congressional weenies. The same weenies that in many cases fly around on the government equivalent of corporate aviation, or on jets owned by constituents and other contributors.

Not to get into politics but Mr. Obama lowers our stock everytime he attacks the "wealthy private-jet travelers"... He doesn't understand the bizjet industry creates thousands of jobs (pilots, F/As, caterers, mechanics, rampers, people who build the airplanes, etc)
