new flight department
i have a meeting in the early part of january with the president of the university of connecticut and my intention is to entice him to start a flight department within the school to use for coaches recruiting for athletics and for basketball teams to fly to their away trips... i need some advice on how to begin the conversation... anyone with some insight, please PM me for a serious conversation...
as for the general forum population, what type of planes are good for this endeavour... obviously a larger A/C is necessary for the basketball teams (consisting of about 17 pax) but an 8 seat jet is good for coaching staff i think... feel free to comment

I flew for an SEC University, we had a BE-90E. Not the best plane, but it worked well for us. Coaches used it during recruiting season, never had more than 4 or 5 people on board. AfterI left, they had upgraded to a BE-200.

jets
the athletic director has noted that he wants somewhere around 2-3 jets as part of the "fleet"... we do a lot of stuff in terms of recruiting and a turboprop wont get it done for them.. the easiest way for me to pitch this to the president is to get a company or FBO to broker the planes out during the "off season" to attempt to offset some of the costs.. with an athletic dept like ours, it is not an issue in regards to money, we just cant go out and buy a 35 million dollar plane like a G-V or global express

Consider a couple different planes. The jets are great but they don't make much sense when you want to go recruit somebody from a town 100 miles away from an airport with the balanced field length you need. That being said, you really can't go wrong with a couple citations. 550s are pretty cheap on the used market, have good range, and simple systems.

Does your school have a flight training program? If so, cross utilization of a nice multi will get the ball rolling. From there you can try to con them into a King Air or similar FAST aircraft (faculty and staff transport).
