Anyone have any info on getting a free (or partially paid for) type rating from the state after getting furloughed? I live in Virginia and along with 800+ other fellow FLYi pilots will be furlouhged on Friday. I can't seem to find any info on the internet on this.

I was able to get a 737 type on my previous lay off but this time was another story.

Sadly the United, Delta, Vangaurd, Legend, NWA and many other thousands of furloughed pilots have already gutted the bank account on that one. Most programs now will only offer skills training for things like welding, commercial truck driving or short order cook training. They claim that the occupation of "pilot" is not in demand anymore and therefore no more government funds will be spent to train people for jobs that will not be there. Sorry.
However each state is different in how they interpret the rules and sometimes a lucky few can still slip through.

Independence Air (Formerly Atlantic Coast Airlines and based out of IAD) is closing it's doors at 7pm Thursday night. There will be no further furloughs... just a shutdown.

At it's largest, the company seniority list was 1680 pilots.

I have been teaching groundschool at a Part 142 training center for the past few years, and have seen numerous furloughed pilots get a type-rating paid for or partially paid for by the state in which they live. I myself received $3,000 in grant money from my home state to pay for my MEI when I was furloughed from an instructor position. My advice would be to start with the workforce center or unemployment office in your state. They should be able to point you in the right direction.

I hate to say it, by SkyHigh may have a point. These funds are usually doled out on a first-come-first-serve basis, and the budgeted allotments may be drying up. The reason I wasn't able to secure more aid was because the state's workforce training fund had been nearly drained...and that was in the fall of 2002.

It's the "Job placement and training act". I believe it was passed in the earily 80's. Its federal money but administered by the states. I tried to use it when I lost my job at Bar Harbor Airways/Eastern Express. Florida would not pay because it said there were no need for pilots. Others who lived in different states got type ratings. I would look into it with your state. As others have said, the money tends to run out by the end of the year, so your chances are better earily in the year. Be preparred for alot of paperwork.
