Default Engine falling off 747 in flight?

Do you all remember hearing about this is 2004 in Michigan? Another member posted an opps, I am having a bad day website. Within that website I found the link to a 747 that lost an engine from ORD to JFK. I am from Indiana and remember our school telling us to be on the lookout for jet engine debris on the ground when flying north to Michigan. The website just brought back old memories that I thought I would rehatch. Does anyone remember this or know how an engine would just decide to quit working and go on a 30,000 foot free fall?

Looks like links do not work. Click on the link and look for engine lost over michigan pictures.

If I recall, the engine was just installed on the plane. Whoever did it forgot to replace the temporary pins with bolts and it eventually jiggled itself loose.

It was good old Kalitta, wasn't it? The engine probably would have just flamed out or had a catastrophic failure in the near future anyway.

American had a JT8 fall off of a 727, oh, `bout 15 years ago. Over New Mexico, I think it was. Thought they "lost an engine" went on to destination (somewhere on the west coast)...Turns out that they literally "lost an engine".

Yep, it was Kalitta. As far as I know they never found the engine, probably at the bottom of Lake Michigan.

I do remember when it happened though. One of my co workers came up and asked me if I'd heard about the 74 that lost an engine. I said no, what's the big deal. That's when he told me, no they lost it as in it's GONE! OH well that's alittle bit of a bigger deal!

There is no temporary installation of a jt-9. An internal flange cracked and the rear dropped sending the engine up and over the wing. It has been located in Lake Michigan, though there are no plans to raise it.

Here is the story of a 747 that had two engines fall off. Not a happy ending.
