Default ramp agent job

I was looking into getting a ramp job for an airline at either IAH or HOU and I was looking at SWA but I read soemwhere they do not hire for part time, is this the case with most airlines? I would prefer to get on with an airline instead of a contractor so leter down the road it might benefit me if I ever wanted a pilot slot with whatever airline. I am 18 and working on commercial and getting ready to start college soon at a local JC, I dont konw too much about the job but anyone with experience with this job please chime in, im anxious to hear what the scheduling is like and if it would be too much to try to balance in between working on ratings and going to school. thanks!

I work with AE on the ramp in BNA... They hire FT and PT. So look at other airlines, besides, last i heard SWA doesnt like to hire off the street for their ramp ops

ok gotcha, I saw AirTran was looking for rampers out of HOU. Anyone have experience with airtran? I realize the pay is different for each airline but what is a good ballpark figure for pay for this line of work?

I ramped for a summer. Pretty much get paid to work out. Working mornings is easiest cause youre dealing with the lighter loads. Occasionally the pilots will talk to you, but remember you are just a ramp rat in their eyes.

The company I worked with was contracted for Alaska, Frontier, and the airline formally known as Aloha.

I was making 8.75, but Im willing to bet that varys by company. Figure out who is flying into your airport, then go find the applications to get that position.

At Eagle, i started at 9.00 an hour, after 6 months you go to 9.50 and after another 6 you go to 10 even... I think that pay scale is set in stone for all of AE... Yea you are getting paid to work out, as far as the morning being lighter, it really varies for us... But yea generally speaking it is easier in the early AM. Now as far as the pilot thing... I gotta disagree, I work, Skywest, Air Canada, Chataqua(however you spell it), Trans States, aswell as Main Line AE here at BNA... I gotta say, I have met hundreds of great pilot all who were great to talk to... The ones that were turds I can count on one hand... I can say that most pilots I run into throughout the day, are nice professional people.

And to the Skywest crew today, I brought you guys down the line, but after that lightning hitless that 15ft from me, there was no way in the world I was chocking the plane, I ran like a scared wittle girl... Dunno what your FA was thinking bout when she opened the door.

I worked SWA ramp for 10 years. There is no such thing as part-time. Hobby Not IAH. And work you will. Pay rate is what it is, you get hired at step one. sorry dont know what that is . I left making more (twice as much) a year then as a regional F/O.

***? The street is the only place people who work ramp get hired from...

Also being a new hire means you are on the bottom of the list, so when you bid you get what's left. usually tues-wed off 15:30-23:30 shift. You will also be the first one Mandatoried to work a double shift and on your first day off if needed. But the benefits are good and the company is always hiring, so you wont be on the bottom too long....
