I was under the impression that you need to be connected to a cellular data network (vs wifi) to access visual voice mail. I stand corrected as I just read the user's manual and you should be able to do so over wifi.

Did you try a turning the phone off, then back on again? If that doesn't work, try holding the home and sleep buttons until you see the Apple logo (about 10 sec), also known as a hard reset. If that doesn't work, ask your question on the Apple Discussion forum - lots of good info there. http://discussions.apple.com/categor...categoryID=201

I am connected via wifi and through the local phone network. I have been able to call out using Orange and paying international roaming-just making sure that it works if I need it and it does. But anyway I am surprised that I couldn't call voicemail since I can make outgoing calls. I could call my voicemail from here with my previous phone.
I also turned off fetch and push when I got over here just to make sure I wouldn't be charged exorbitant international rates unknowingly and I thought maybe that might have had something to do with not being able to access voicemail. But I turned them on just to check and still no joy. I tried the turning off and back on and the reset thing but still nothing happens when I hit Call Voicemail.
I'll check the website and see if there is any knowledge to be gained there.
Thanks for the help.

At hotels with strong wi-fi signals the call hasn't gone through at all. In the lower left corner of my keypad it said for the first couple of days "your credit: unavailable". Now it says: "retrieving". I've tried their support but they seem hopelessly overwhelmed.... We are working hard at resolving these issues.....
Has anyone one else had any luck using truphone? Any troubleshooting ideas??
Have you tried Skype for iPhone yet? Personally I haven't since the international trips are now out of my reach due to the age 60 rule but I heard good things about IM+ for Skype. This program is actually separate from Skype but it lets you access Skype on your phone. You pay $5 or so a month or for $30 you’ll get life usage of this program. Of course you also need to have a Skype account with a Skype Out balance.

Go to www.s4iphone.com on your iPhone and download it to your phone (the direct download page is here IM+ for Skype :: Products).

Then make sure you turn off your network when overseas and make the call or text when in WiFi coverage.

If you decide to use it please let us know how the sound quality, etc was...

Hey I tried the Skype for my iPhone without much luck. I have a Skype Out balance and I was on a good wifi network. I had used Truphone with a really good connection on this network. So I go to that website and get to the registration page and successfully register and tried to call. Strangely, the phone I was calling on rang. It was confusing. Tried again with my wife's cell instead of home (using stored numbers on Skype which came up when I registered)...same thing. One more time using a keypad instead of my contacts page, same thing. Each time I didn't get through and MY phone started ringing. Later I called home using Truphone and my wife asked if I had tried earlier. Turns out it did ring there although I didn't hear it or hear anything when she picked up. She evidently didn't hear me going "What the #*!*%" either.
I'm here in the Concorde Lafayette in Paris now and am having no luck calling out with their wifi network using Truphone. I even tried downstairs in the lobby where there is a stronger signal. I asked at the business office and the lady told me that their wireless was too slow for VOIP use. She said the only time Skype works is if you use an ethernet cable in the business office. Anybody else run into problems at the Concorde...phone problems, that is?

It's too bad I was really hoping this program would work. It works great from the US but what's the point, right?

By the way, the program WILL make your phone ring each time. Basically when you dial a Skype contact (or just dial a number) both your phone and the phone of the person you're calling will ring. The Skype for the iPhone program works as a connection between the two numbers which is why both phones will ring...

Could you try to text message your wife using the Skype program? Maybe that could be a backup if voice doesn't work?

While I haven't yet used the website that allows you to use skype overseas on your iPhone, isn't your phone supposed to ring? My understanding is that using the site, it sets up two calls, one to your phone (or any number you chose - landline would be cheaper) and also rings the phone your calling. It charges you rates accordingly, ie. your mobile phone to another mobile would be the most expensive, and landline to landline the least expensive (ie. .02 + .02). At least that's how I read it!

You're correct and both phones ring when making the call here in the US as well...

For those who may be interested and can afford it (i.e. Captains), AT&T is now offering international iPhone data plans.

AppleInsider | AT&T adds new international iPhone data plans

Very expensive does not even begin to describe it.
