I'm on my first trip in Europe with my iPhone. I've followed the threads here on APC and have turned off international roaming to avoid the big charges. I've been frustrated trying to use Truphone though. I've gotten it to place a call once but the quality was so poor it was unusable. At hotels with strong wi-fi signals the call hasn't gone through at all. In the lower left corner of my keypad it said for the first couple of days "your credit: unavailable". Now it says: "retrieving". I've tried their support but they seem hopelessly overwhelmed.... We are working hard at resolving these issues.....
Has anyone one else had any luck using truphone? Any troubleshooting ideas??
I've used it and had pretty good success. If you don't see "your credit: x.xx", it won't work. Maybe try deleting the app and reloading it. I used it last week and it worked as well as skype. But just like skype, if your signal is weak, your call quality may suffer.
PS, try using the internet. On some wi-fi networks, you have to reconnect to the internet. So go to safari and try google or something (or, heck even a porn site) and see if it works. Sometimes you have to go through the routine that you did when you first logged on, even though you see the wireless signal detected. If you can indeed surf the web, you are having truphone issues and I would delete the app and reload.

Yep, you beat me to that one! Can be a pain sometimes, but worth it for the extra speed (speaking domestically, of course).

Ok, I"m feeling a little stupid here. The tip about going to the internet worked. I had the signal indication and had logged in on my laptop so I thought I was connected on the phone. But it turns out I needed to do same login drill with the iphone. Once I had logged in to a website on my phone, I went to Truphone and my credit popped up immediately. Got through to home with real good quality. Thanks guys.
One other question. While troubleshooting I tried to dial a number in the states using the "+" sign but kept getting the 0. What's the trick to dialing a +?
It's down there with the 0. And I know the + is the same as "00". It's just that it's there, so there must be a way to use it!
Same way you use the A, B and C! Right?
A little searching on the truphone site yielded this little gem -
Quote:
I cannot dial the "+" sign when making a Truphone call on the iPhone
This is a known issue that should be fixed in the next release. Simply replace the "+" with "00" or "011" in the USA. The App Store will keep you up to date with any future releases and updates.
Just a heads up on the American Tru Saver Plan....
You will lose any unused minutes after one month unless you purchase more before the expiration date. The unused minutes may rollover, but only up to 2500 max in any one month.

That's good to know. It looked like it could be a good deal.
Here's something else I ran into with the iPhone, not Truphone-related, though.
I got a call that went to voicemail and when I went to check it there was a message saying "visual voicemail not available because data roaming is turned off" Okay, I understand that much...I have the data roaming turned off on purpose. Then it said there were additional messages on the server and there was a box that said "call voicemail". I'm on a network and have made some calls but repeated pushing, swearing, harder pushing didn't work.
Anyone run into that?
