Default Non-Reving to Japan

Just curious if anyone here has any experience with traveling as a non-rev to Japan and how easy it was for you. How is traveling through NRT and other Japanese airports?

The girlfriend and I are both airline employees (unfortunately we don't have service to Japan), and are looking at flying on a ZED fare from anywhere on the westcoast (lax, sfo, sea, slc).

Would a foreign carrier (JAL or SQ for example) be a little more comfortable than one of ours? I've only flown international on BA, which I found to be pretty comfortable for an economy seat.
