Default Panty Joke Ruins Man's Life In Athens, TN

Here's my contribution to today's Interesting and Bizarre news article. Good thing this guy (being drunk and all) is not posting on APC or he wouldn't get that Good Experience I so want people to have when they come visiting.

A Riceville man who was found walking down Highway 11 intoxicated and with around 40 pairs of female underwear says it was only an ill-advised prank and the publicity that followed it has ruined his life.

Jason Johnson says he took the items from a friend's house as a prank after a pool party Saturday evening on County Road 157. He and some of his friends were going to take the items back to another neighbor's house and throw them in a tree for his female friend to find the next day, he said. Things didn't quite work out as planned, however, because when Johnson saw a vehicle approaching on Highway 11, he believed it was his friend coming to pick him up and started waving his arms. Unfortunately for Johnson, the vehicle was driven by McMinn County Sheriff Deputy Todd Levi, who was out on routine patrol. Levi arrested Johnson on a public intoxication charge, but the owner of the missing underwear declined to press charges.

Johnson, of County Road 158, Riceville, now says the publicity that followed the event has caused him to miss two days of work out of embarrassment because he feels the reports paint him to be some kind of pervert.

"I made a bad drunken mistake," Johnson said. "I know it was not a mature thing for a 31-year-old to do ... it was just a childish joke."

Johnson said he hadn't been to a party in some time and knew he shouldn't have had as much to drink as he did. He now says he is going to swear off alcohol altogether. He said he didn't think of the repercussions of what he was doing and is sorry for acting childish.

He is now trying to figure out how to repair his image in the community and how to explain the incident to the rest of his family.
Johnson said he thought the charge of public intoxication was embarrassing enough and believed everything was going to be OK until he saw the newspaper on Monday. Johnson's tale was first publicized in The Daily Post-Athenian and on radio reports on Monday, and it's since spread through The Associated Press wire to news outlets in Knoxville and Chattanooga, even as far away as Nashville and Huntsville, Ala. *

Shame, shame. Making fun of cultural diversity again. Will they never learn?
