Default Chinese Fighter Jet Nose-dives At Air Show

Another tragedy. Hope the other pilot managed to eject after all.

Quote:
A Chinese air force jet crashed at an air show Friday, leaving one of the pilots missing and presumed dead. Footage aired by China Central Television showed the jet sputtering and then nose-diving into a field outside the northern city of Xi'an as one of the pilots ejected from the cockpit and landed beneath an open parachute.
Only one parachute was seen opening, and the plane burst into flames upon crashing.
The other pilot's seat appeared not to have ejected.

Looks like only one got out. How does the ejection seat system work, do both guys have to pull their own handles or can one guy pull his and activate both seats?

Depends.
If the system is similar to US systems it would depend on what position the Ejection Select handle was in. With two qualified and experienced aircrew I suspect that it would be in the Command position - which in most would mean that either could eject both essentially.
But I have no idea how their system might be set up.

No disrespect intended but I am reminded of a line from Flight of the Intruder (book or movie). One of the guys was giving a Chaplin a Safety Briefing before heading out to the Carrier. In my memory, the conversaiton went like this.

He told the Chaplin "If we have to leave the aircraft, I will yell Eject, Eject, Eject and you pull that handle between your legs.'

The Chaplin replied "What should I say after you say that?"

He replied, "It doesn't matter. You'll be talking to yourself."

Or something like that.

Like USMC said, if it's like ours a command eject from either cockpit will sequence both, usually with the back seater going first.

Looks like it was an FB-7 Flounder.
