Default A340 landed nearly halfway down runway in tailwind

Airbus A-340 touched down nearly halfway down the rain-soaked runway: official

TORONTO (CP) - The lead investigator for the Transportation Safety Board says the landing speed of the Air France jet involved in a fiery crash at Toronto's Pearson International Airport was near normal.

However Real Levasseur says the Airbus A-340 touched down nearly halfway down the rain-soaked runway, too far along to stop on the runway under those conditions.

Levasseur says the plane was travelling at about 148 knots with a tailwind when it touched down on the runway on Tuesday while the usual approach speed is 140 knots.

The jet was going almost 80 knots by the time it reached the end of the runway.

The 309 passengers and crew exited the plane using only half of the plane's eight doors and emergency exits.

Levasseur says flight attendants decided not to open two of the doors because they saw a fire on that side of the plane and deemed it too dangerous while a slide on a third door didn't inflate and a slide on a fourth door didn't deploy.
