Timballo:

What was your background before UAVs? How do you like the job? What is it like day-to-day?

I think this career field holds great potential.

How long is the training at General Atomics? After you are checked out do you have to live in or near Palmdale? Do you get large blocks of time off after a desert tour?

Hello UAVAV8R, I'm very interested in and trying to move to the Southern California area. I'll even be in the area later this February. I have a commercial pilot cert, CFI and a degree in avionics. I tried to send a PM but can't until I get more posts. Do you mind sharing an email address or another form of contact?

The training varies. It really depends on the current schedule/number of students.

You do need to live near Palmdale or Victorville. No you do not get blocks of time off after a trip. If you have vacation you can use that but the company isn't going to give you the time off.

Timballo,

What is the starting pay? How many days away from base per year is the average? How well are you treated by management?

I no longer work for them but when I was there the standard time away was in the 6-8 months a year time frame. Pay is decent, you will certainly be making 6 figures. As far as management, I am sure it is different from when I was there...Hopefully it has improved.

Customs and Border Protection is hiring a lot of UAV pilots for pretty attractive pay near $90K to start. Search it on USAJOBS - there are TWO separate job announcements - one is for under age 40 applicants, and the other is for over age 40 applicants. One huge advantage is that you can expect to be home daily, and the federal benefits are excellent.

While UAS is the primary duty, I think it is likely that you may qualify in other aircraft and/or participate as an observer while flying in CBP aircraft. Loads of other special assignments are available. Once you are in, you might be able to transfer or become a full time RW or FW pilot. All great questions to ask in the interview.

The job announcement has been pulled down during a current wave of interviews, but I am nearly certain it will be reposted.

Locations: Grand Forks ND / Sierra Vista CA
Search: Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) on
USAJOBS - The Federal Government's Official Jobs Site

Alternate Search: Air Interdiction Agent

If anybody has inside info for any of the UAV companies and doesn't mind contacting me. Here is my email address. [email protected]
Thanks for any help.
And UAVAV8R, if it matters or helps, I plan on sending my resume to your company today.

Timballo,

Thanks for the info. One more question if you don't mind. Are you required to maintain an FAA physcical for this position?
