From a July 29th Memo from Delta's Senior Vice President for Flight Ops:

"One last administrative note before I finish. A few weeks ago we closed out the voluntary early retirement program. Over 160 pilots and 2,000 total employees elected to participate. The pilot exits will begin when we start to pull down flying in September, and we expect them to be completed by the end of the year. Many of the retirements were from the 330 and 747 fleets, and we are moving forward with our plan to modify our 330-200 crew rest facilities and fly those aircraft on flights greater than 12 hours. This of course means we need more Captains in the 330 fleet. The early retirements coupled with the need for more 330 Captains means we have some significant training coming up in the next nine months. Right now, we are staffed properly for the rest of the year and the flying we expect to see at the beginning of next year."

This means we are staffed properly through...January? I would expect some hiring in the Spring of 2012.

Jumpseated recently in the cockpit of a Delta crew and they confirmed upcoming new hire classes. The Captain mentioned they were at the end of the pool of flow-thru pilots under the original NWA agreement.

No new hire classes scheduled right now, neither are interviews. Some believe we'll take flows this fall and hire off the street next year. As far as flows go, we're not at the "end of the pool". Pretty much the entire Compass list can flow up and theres still a good chunk of Mesaba guys eligible to still flow up as well.

about 320 pilots at compass, and well over 100 at XJ can flow up. 20 per month from compass and 9 per month from XJ. It will take several years to drain the flow ups at this rate. No current new hire classes are scheduled at delta, however that can quickly change with the next ae...whenever the crew scheduling gods seem fit to release it. Ps..sorry for the sloppy iPhone post
