I am guessing this is a commuting contract and you have to commute to/from Japan on your days off, right?

Yes it's a commuting contract, but you are given 2 commuting days that are not part of your contractual days off (which is actually 10 days), so it works out to be 12 "off" in total. To maximize days off a lot of guys use vacation days every month. You get 24 per annum, which works out to be 2 days per month or 14 "off" in total per month. To get a vacation you just request a back-to-back which is 28 off in a row, but of course you pay for it as you have to work a back-to-back. This is just one of the options, but you can do whatever you like with your 24 days - all at once or brake it up in 2,3,4 days and so on.

Thanks for the explanation. I would apply if there was a possibility to live there, but commuting half way around the world every month for a so so contract job...

So-so contract job? This is one of the best out there! Not for everyone, but it's a good gig.

For a FO position, this is by far the best foreign commuting contract out there (my opinion of corse). Not for everyone, but if you are looking for roster stability, days off, business class commute, possibly an upgrade (no guarantees though) and a little bit of cash on the side this is the one.
The upgrades are currently running at 5 years. I think they might come down a little bit, but not by much. If you plan on being an FO in your first contract than you're safe !

What would stop someone from renting a place in Tokyo and living there?

I am by no means an expert, however I looked into this contract. A lot of pilots do rent apartments since your 16 days in Tokyo you do not spend all of them overnight outside Japan.. I was told on a 16 day rotation you could expect 7-12 days in Tokyo.

I have heard however not verified that you also can stay on your days off for a certain period of time... I am not sure how the visa works. I was not selected for the job so I sort of stopped my investigation, but I want to say that every third month you would need to leave for a continuous duration... if that makes sense. So two months of working there and living there on days off, then the third month working there and leaving the country to go some where.

If you choose not to take the business class seat each month you get an additional $2000 which is nice, and also why some pilots choose to do the back to back... 28 days off, then 32 on type thing.

I have heard that you get your days off request about 90% of the time... there actually is a very good thread here in APC if you search.
