Yes most are pure blood. What people dont realize is the expense it takes just to maintain one, we spend in excess of 1500 a year on our two, between checkups, food and vet bills for shots, excetera. So people neglect them, mabye not intentionally, but for example if you dont constantly clean their wrinkles, and tails they get skin deseases, and infections, not to mention cherry eye surgery that can be required when you least expect it at $800 an eye, and they can eat, we feed ours Iams which isnt cheap. Most of the rescue dogs are very well tempered the breed has an amazing tempermant, if cared for and loved. Most rescue dogs though need a good investment in time and money for medical care, so even if you adopt one from rescue be prepared to spend some money. another common mistake people make is they just leave them outside in fenced in yards,( and with this breed that is neglect, plain and simple) you cant do that with this breed, although they should have access to outdoors, ie a doggie door and fenced in yard, they can not stay out all the time, their thick skin and wrinkles makes them very prone to overheating, and they can stroke out on you, or get very sick. Ours have free run of the house and the fenced in yard. Just some of the things to consider with this breed. But if none of this scares you, or you can handle it then you could be hard pressed to find a more loving and loyal dog..
