I'm in the gym frequently. I destroyed my left shoulder and right hand last year in an accident and began with just very light wts and limited machines for range of motion. I did the elliptical because I could not take the bouncing of jogging with the shoulder they rebuilt.

I have worked back up to more weights but still am doing more reps with light weights but will be changing within the next few days or weeks to an easy/hard/easy/hard/easy/very hard/rest cycle. This was a training cycle I used to train for full and half marathons.

I use a heart monitor on the ellipitcal and have gotten some runs in but the injury has effected my gait. It will take some time before I feel comfortable with the jogging. I will also adopt the monitor for the elliptical with some long cycles at low heart rate for fat burn and other days with 80-90% beat rate (sort of fartleks).

The weights? One day, sets with light weights and 50 reps. ( I read where John Smoltz rehabbing his pitching was doing up to a 1000 reps with some exercises. Other days will be less reps, more weights.

At 64, you don't come back as fast. But you can come back if not all the way, most of the way.

Thumbs up None

Hey III Corps... Well its very commendable of you still doing it and yes the cardio benefits are great. Forget your age. its just a number. It be lucky if any guys half your age have the discipline to even do what you do.

Great to hear fellow pilots out there hitting the gym.....i recently started doing triathlons.
it has changed my lifestyle completely...instead of looking forward to hitting the room or going and eating on the road i can wait to swim, bike(on the stationary on the road),or run when i get to wherever i am staying....i strength train only two days a week on my days off from my triathlon training.

any fellow pilots out there doing tri's?

For anyone looking for a good quick fat-burning exercise using weights instead of treadmills or other traditional cardio equipment look into the Cosgrove Complexes. T-nation has some good info.

Jason, never did a triatholon but sure love to try a half one.. Dont want to burn up my muscles LOL

Yes on those cosgrove complexes.. they are awesome... T.nation is a great site Rama.. Glad u been on it...QUick fat burning can also be achieved via HIIT ( High Intensity Interval training) cardio which is very short but jacks your metabolism through the roof...Amazing for fat burning.

I've done 2 full Iron man distance triathlons and dozens of shorter ones, raced road bikes, and run marathons which all included wt. training ......however;

I just recently started training at a Cross Fit gym and the workouts are harder than anything I've done. The work out is a blend of cardio, and pure strength/explosive power. The super low tech workouts can be done just about anywhere and change each day. In six weeks, I haven't done the same workout twice. I find the workout routines more of challenge than Marine Corps boot camp (although it HAS been a while).

I know it sounds like a mix between a trendy new workout and fight club, but results (and challenge) speak for themselves.

Whoa.. 2 full Iron man. Do u find it manageable with your work schedule to do the training. I admire that. Right now, im focusing on just my swimming along side my usual weight training regime.. Its a great hobby of mine and want to build up to a mile... Just countless benefits from it too which includes helping me get to single digit b.f. and then get in gaining mode.. Now I just am focused on dropping fat..

Just to clarify, it wasn't the Iron Man in Kona, just to "Iron Man" distance triathlons. Anyway, that was in between leaving the Marine Corps and before getting hired at an airline. I honestly don't think I could put those miles in now, although short distances would be manageable. I do know some guys I fly with that have done the "full" distance in the past year so it is possible.

HSLD,

Been doing Crossfit for over a year now and love it. Even carry rings with me on my layovers.

FO and I got some strange looks from a hotel manager this summer when we were doing pullups in a tree...
