I wish the Feds would act like there's an impending controller shortage and make it a job that paid (better)...but doing something for free or close to it seems to be the order of business in this business. This said, Air Traffic Controllers are absolute badasses

The 55 retirement is only at Federal Towers, towers such as at my airport being contract, have no retirement, so hence we gather some retired guys and some others as well.

"As for flying jobs, I have never heard of anything like that."

When I was with ATC, and that was back in the mid-80's, there were no restrictions on flying. I spotted fish and CFIed in my off time.

"any atc forums out there???"

Check out Jetcareers.com - Welcome They have a very active ATC community.

Contract towers will pretty much only hire ex ATC guys right? I'm moving to a town with a contract tower, but have no ATC experience so that's probably a dead end.

Well, you need a CTO (control tower operator) to be a controller. It's a license from the FAA just like a pilot must have a license. You could put yourself through a few of the private schools that offer the training, but I doubt you'd find it cost effective, given what the pay is at contract towers.

I am thinking about making the jump. Been through the test, etc. and got an offer pending some paperwork issues. Still on the fence....
