Fantastic post cgdaddy - you seemed to have taken all the thoughts in my mind and put them into text. I'm so tired of the airline lifestyle and the sacrifices that go with it. I went on a backpacking trip into a wilderness area in the rockies this week with my son. Only sign of humans/civilization we saw the whole time? Planes overhead. Made me think of work, of dreading going back, and of all the time I had missed out with him, and with my family. I HATED seeing and hearing those plane (so did he..)!
I bet those moments by the campfire with your son roasting marshmellows, cooking beans and hot dogs, talking about sports, girls, birds, bears, fishing...whatever....meant more to you than any airline flight in the world. Great story, really hits home with me.
For UPS captain....I said, I'm buying a business, it's in my first post. I'll leave it at that other than to say I'm cashing in my savings to buy it.
As for the lifestyle, it appears you're single. Should you ever get married and then have kids I do wonder if your outlook would change.
Over the years I've seen pilots of two thoughts, those who like aviation but see more to life and those who eat and breath this stuff and can't fathom life without it. That you have your own web site to tell the world about yourself and have everyone read your neato story, well I'm going out on a limb to put you in the eat and breath category. Good for you, I'm happily not there.
To those staying in, cool, good for you all. For those getting out, great for you too. It's all good, we're all different.
"Unless you are an aviation obsessed loner who is also a trust fund baby this career is not for you"
Some here would like to pass off complaints about the profession as merely not being suited for the job. My point is that if the profession can not find a way to satisfy income and lifestyle needs for those with main stream lifestyles then it is only suited for aviation obsessed loners and trust fund recipients.
