Those who have money will never understand the pain of going to work everyday knowing that you are making less than the rampers and burning up days of your life towards an empty future.
If you have money then fly and have fun. Who cares right?? I mean I don't care either except that I was trying to make a living at it and being poor is no fun. Perhaps if I were a financially independent playboy I too could stroke my ego by being a career CFI.
The point is that this is supposed to be a profession. Something to hang your hat on and a place to build a life around. Doctors, lawyers and dentists all have their hang ups and short comings but for the most part they all have the ability to make a living and are working towards a future.
People are evaluating this profession against many others. Aviation asks too much for too little.

I am happy to stay at home and play XBox 360 and fly my 150. What does that pay?

Become a game tester, and you can stay at home and play your XBox 360, and fly your 150. I don't know how much that pays.
Truthfuly, I see the point you are trying to make, but I disagree with it. I know plenty who are pilots who make a good living, and it makes them happy doing something they love. Becoming a pilot does not destin someone to a life of poverty, at all. Becoming a pilot has as much, or more income potential as almost any job. Going into another career, isn't going to guarantee money, any more than becoming a pilot. I guarantee if first year FO pay at the regionals wasn't so low, and people didn't focus on that, to refer to this as a $20K job, then you wouldn't see near the complaints. rickdb and I both have friends/family in the industry, and both of us are getting a completely different story than the one told by the negatives of these message boards. It is nice to hear both sides, but there are two sides to every career, not just being a pilot.
I am open to the idea of other careers, in the event that flying for a living doesn't provide what I want.
Then why did you become a pilot? Everyone knows, even people outside of aviation, that pilots are gone alot.
I knew that pilots were gone a lot. When I started the neighborhood pilot was gone for three days and then back for four.
The problem is that not only are pilots gone 4 days now and home three but you also have to move to a miserable town or commute for wages that are less than survivable.
You might be able to look to the former generation of pilots as an example of what to expect however the profession is in decline. Things have changed. The brass ring that I was striving for is gone.

I have known lots of happy pilots. They may be happy now but times change, people change and companies go under. I too was once a happy pilot however the industry has changed and so have I.
As a father and husband I need income, security and some QOL. It use to be that by the time a pilot reached 30 or so you had something to believe in. Right now there are a few thousand guys on the street with family's to feed and a wallet full of type ratings and no where to go.
Just because you know a few pilots who are happy does not mean that they shall remain that way. All it takes sometimes is a few small changes from management to transform a dream job into a nightmare.

Just curious sky, who then qualifies to be an airline pilot, Anyone? Seriously, I would really like to know what your criteria is for a person to be “qualified” to pursue this line of work; seriously what is it?

The guy who is qualified to be an airline pilot ideally comes from an aviation family that is wealthy and well connected.

I just want to say, that comment is ridiculous if you are just using it to refer to pilots. I guarrantee that individuals at Lehman Brothers and Bears Stern. Your comment relates to all careers, not just pilots.
Those qualifications of being a pilot are ridiculous too.
What careers would you recommend to someone, who doesn't want to be a doctor, lawyer, or engineer, that they can go into, make a very good living/salary, and hang their hat on?
