ChrisH:

You are so right...I firmly believe that it's a calling on one's life to a specific/particular vocation. In the great scheme of things, I think and feel very strongly that we are drawn/attracted to a profession where we will be of service to others.

Whether the salary is 40K or 100K depends upon each individual and how they characterize success in terms of what they earn.

I use to believe that stuff too. Aviation is a calling alright.

There are plenty of ways that we can serve others without making the huge sacrifices that an aviation career demands. As a 47 year old with a new family your first responsibility is to them.

Starting an aviation career at this point in your life is nearly paramount to abandoning your wife and children and placing their financial lives in jeopardy. It will cause hardship and damage.

They need a stable life, income and retirement plan. Resist the urge. Stand up for the choices that you have already made.

Sky,

I actually have to agree with you on this one. If I had a wife and kid, I definitely would not have made the jump to become a pilot, unless I was a millionaire. Im not saying that it cant be done, I would not recommend it. That is why I told myself that it is now or never.

Tony,

If someone can honestly say "that's all I can takes -- I can't takes no more", then they have made a real try (at any career). I think you and Sky did give aviation a real try, and am glad you both found something that worked out better for you.
