well i am not so young anymore...ill be 25 in sept. thanks for the great advice everyone. its really helping to get so many perspectives

Why do you assume everyone else knows nothing? 1990 was 18 years ago. That is a really low salary, but most of the higher quality regionals make it into the 20k range. Maybe not much more, but better than 13k. You can live on that, just not real well.

Default Regional Pay

My take home pay as an FO for Horizon Air was $492 every two weeks in the late 1990's. My rent was $650 at the time. Not good. No fun.

In 1980 when Horizon Air began they started captains at 42K to fly the F27 that is equivalent to $118,500 today.

13K in 1990 is equivalent to $21480 today.

Why would you assume that I assume "everyone" else knows nothing? I responded to a stupid remark made by someone else.

There's NOTHING you can tell me about how to live on nothing-I was there.

25!? Well, what's the hold-up? Get to work, ya slacker! (just kidding). I was actually 27 before going to school and getting my ratings. It was the booze/women thing holding me up.

So, one question for you:

Which career do you want?

One.......or two. One........or two. Or about the same?

The thing is, no one can answer the question for you. Was the route to where I am now difficult? Yes, it was difficult but I never for one moment thought I would fail to get to where I wanted to go. What you have to decide is if you have the passion to take it that far or if you will be longing for more as a regional FO.

The airline lifestyle works for me. I have lots of time off to pursue other interests. For me that is business, I enjoy it. I enjoy real estate so my work on days off is not really work to me. There are no guarantees in this business or any other. There is no guarantee that you would make it all the way through Opthometry school. Your own personal drive will determine that.

I have a friend who is a CEO of a financial services company. We were talking the other night about his decision to resign and go another way. He said if anyone ever asks him if they should go into his industry, he would tell them to run away screaming. He isn't a failure, far from it. He is very very successful but just doesn't want to deal with it anymore.

Follow Donald Trump's advice, do what you love. What feeling do you get walking into your dad's office? What feeling do you get walking into the FBO? There are many many ways to make money even if you are a pilot. Making money off of investments doesn't care what your day job is.

Before someone starts bashing me, I've been through it and my current job had nothing to do with luck or knowing anybody. I was a flight instructor, traffic watch pilot, corporate pilot, regional FO, regional Captain, and now a major airline pilot (for the narrow minds out there, major airlines can be from another country. CX is 61 years old). I was in the industry before, during and after 9/11. I'm in it now. I worked darn hard to get here and I work darn hard in my other business ventures. I still find time to do other things I enjoy and spend lots of time with family.

Seatmeat's advice is probably the best you could get in your situation. If you are going to have a part time job, why not fly? You may even enjoy it so much that you'd instruct on the side when you are a Doctor. At the very least, get your instructor rating(s). Follow your heart and do what you want. Enjoy life, the money will come if you want it bad enough.
