Learflyer, are you really are serious about leaving the industry altogether or just for now until things turn the corner? If you are serious about hanging up the headsets then for sure the medical field is the place to be in.

Speaking of the medical field, how far did you get as far as your current degree is concerned, Associates, BA, BS or Masters? What about science courses, did you take a whole lot of it or will you have to sort of start from scratch?

That's the thing. I don't have alot of math/science courses. And I'm not sure how serious I am about it. I don't feel i'm reacting to my layoff, because I thought of pursuing other careers anyway. I would have to start from scratch. I'm 37 (soon) and feel it's not to late to begin something else. Would I leave Aviation? I guess if I did, it wouldn't have to be permanent. It's all to early. My wife would have to be on board, etc. I'm trying to be realistic about becoming a PA, because it can't be done halfway. From what I see, it's pretty competitive. I don't have a huge passion for medicine like Tony might. I think I just see some stability. Would that be a wrong reason to get into it?

If you went into it solely because of the money.

It seems to vary from state to state and depends upon how much money they have left. It is the same program that buys people type ratings after they get laid off. When I got laid off I applied to go back to college however my local school was not enrolled into the program so I took a type rating instead.

Just say Workforce Investment Act or WIA and "Dislocated Worker" to your unemployment agent or officer. Sometimes a layoff does not get the better benefits from the government as a shut down company. It is worth a try.
