When I was a regional pilot most of the lines were a combination of overnights and day trips. It was nice to at least be home for 12 to 14 hours a night or two during the middle of a block. Only one time was I gone for two nights in a row. Now I am told that Horizon Air at least has gone to mostly 5 day trips. Five days is a long time to be gone on a regular basis.

To a single commuter this is of course the ideal situation however for a family person who lives at his/her base and trying to have the most time at home it is not. I remember getting a few bids for all day trips. One month I showed up for work at 7:00AM and was done by 3:00PM.

Do other airlines still have day trips?

Horizon hasn't quite gone to 5 day trips (although management sure wants to), but the vast majority are 4 day trips. Then if a trip isn't 4 days, it is usually paired with another one so you get two 3 day trips in a row, which is in reality a 6 day trip with an overnight in your base. Day trips show up on the schedule about once in a great long while. At least that was how it was back in october before i jumped off that sinking ship as well.

I'm only 40% in base and I'm doing seven daytrips next month.

They still exist.

Default Stand up

I remember that Horizon Air also had a trip called the "stand up overnight". We would show up at 9:00PM or so and fly a few legs until midnight or 1:00AM. Then we would hit the hotel for four hours and head back out to the airport for another few legs ending our day at 9:00AM or so.

Not a bad deal for the family person. You could be home during the waking hours.
