Thanks.
Many mis-steps this week. Person who was to send me fingerprint cards was out, and no one else did it. I got some, had the local police department do them, but he only signed (he didn't put his info on them - not sure if they'll get kicked back).
Travel didn't come through, so flight check postponed a week. Guy arranging check tells me 'no problem' as they're doing checks up until the end of the month. Not sure how that jibes with getting hired before end of the fiscal year.
One last question - have a previously paid vacation scheduled for end of October. Assuming I start before end of September, I obviously won't have any time off coming. Any thoughts on getting an unpaid leave?
How quickly do you go to OKC? Ran into a couple of guys who have been there since May, but they're waiting to go to OKC in the new fiscal year.

I received my "Are you available to work" letter Feb. 1, 2008 but by the time the process was completed and HR called and offered me the job, it was June 8, 2008 before I started.
Started string classes 1-1/2 months later.

Congrats! The first year is kinda rough.. "Cooperate and graduate"... And every other Tuesday you get paid...
Your "first year" probationary experience really depends on management's attitude at your office towards new-hires.. Some offices treat newbies poorly and they end up leaving.. I know of two guys that left for regionals shortly after coming on board. The particular office I speak of can't seem to figure out why the OPS side is a revolving door... Most of the GA guys have bailed for Air Carrier positions. I hope your office is a good one! I hope The OJT program is functional at your office. If you are not advised, ask your Supv who the OJT Program Manager is and get a briefing from them. Hopefully you will find a good mentor in the office to pair up with. Ask around and seek opportunities to go out in the field with the journeyman inspectors. Read FAA Order 8900.1 (FSIMS) whenever you can. Remember that this is a bureaucracy and there is a process, procedures and forms for everything...

So far, the hiring manager has been super. I'm hoping it's a good experience, as I'm passing on a great job to take this. Appreciate all the insight.

Typically office wide. There is no dress code, which is kind of neat, but who you work with usually dictates the dress code. The idea is you need to look like who you are working with. If I travel out into wilderness on board small aircraft, I'm wearing survival gear. There are plenty of operations where my clothing has to be "functional". If you dealing with 121 operators that go in and out of big airports, you are probably expected to have a dress shirt and tie or something similar. In the office it's most always business casual, except for Friday, Halloween, etc.

I can't tell you how things are run in the AFS world.
These other guys can help you of course with the ins-and-outs of FSDO living. I can honestly tell you that I love not wearing a uniform to work (other than a flight suit - I'm still pushing that!).
