I went to the bnsf interview and took the written test. It seemed pretty easy as most of it was reading comp stuff. Somehow I managed to botch it!!! Any how working on the railroad is much like airline life from what I hear. Only you risk being on reserve much longer aka an "extra board". And they will call at all odd hours of the night and day once you get your legal rest.

Yeah...i just had my test at amtrak today in chicago. Its very much like airlines....i wanted that but with actual pay and benefits....especially the RR retirement pension. Both sides have their pros and cons.

What's the earning potential in this career field? Where are you based and how long on the road?

It's probably the best "blue collar" job out there in terms of pay. I know guys that just got into it and make $60k. I know other dudes that have been in for only a few years and make $80k.

Base just depends on where you apply to work. Expect to be on the road A LOT. A lot more than aviation for sure.

I've found the adjustment to "normal" flying very difficult
What did you find difficult adjusting to?
