Default Skybus gets FAA Certification to start Flying May 22

Skybus gets OK from FAA to start flights on May 22

By Barnet D. Wolf

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Skybus Airlines has received certification from the Federal Aviation Administration, meaning the airline can begin service May 22 as planned.

“FAA certification is the final hurdle,” said Ken Gile, the president and chief operating officer of Skybus. “We are ready to take our place in the U.S. airline community.”

The first scheduled Skybus flight will be a 9:36 a.m. departure May 22 from the company's base, Port Columbus International, to Bob Hope Airport in Burbank, Calif.

The airline launches Columbus service later that day to Kansas City International Airport and to the Boston area through Portsmouth (N.H.) International Airport.

Flights to Richmond, Va., begin the following day. Skybus starts flying May 29 to three more destinations: Fort Lauderdale, Greensboro, N.C., and the Seattle-Vancouver, Canada market through Bellingham, Wash.
Another market, San Francisco, will be served with flights through Oakland International Airport beginning June 12. Other destinations will be announced later.

Skybus quickly captured the attention of travelers by offering at least 10 seats for $10 on every one of its flights. Other seats cost more and there will be additional fees for other services, such as baggage, food and reserved seats.

The carrier raked in $160 million in startup funds from investors, including central Ohio companies Nationwide Mutual Capital, Huntington Capital Investment Co. and Wolfe Enterprises, a subsidiary of The Dispatch Printing Company.
