Default United Airlines

I just received a letter today from UAL encouraging me to apply. I was hired in January 01 and put into the pool and was real close to a class date when hiring stopped in Aug 01 (9-11). Not sure if I will apply or not. Looked at current pay scale and it hurts for the first SEVERAL years. Was wondering if anyone else in this situation was gonna apply. I'm not doing to bad where I'm at now and may wait and push real hard for UPS and FED EX. Anybody have any info on schedules, outlook, and maybe the possibility of pay increases at UAL.
Thanks

Why not just apply and make a decision when and if they offer you a position?

if ups and fedex don't hire you would you rather be at united your current job. you can always leave united for either of those airlines.

did you ever contact them before they contacted you?

UAL ALPA is winding up for a Strike while UAL management is trying to sell or merge the airline (so far, they haven't shown any talent or interest for actually running an airline).

Labor at UAL has been brutalized under the pretense of shared sacrifice, but it appears that any future contract improvements will be through the "Full Monty" of section 6 negotiations.

Morale at UAL is in the toilets, the airplanes are broken down, pay is at the back of the pack, and applicants will be expected to strike by the union and expected to cross the picket line by management.

Work rules in the narrowbody fleet is as close to straight FARs as any "major" airline out there with no relief in sight. Customer satisfaction is last among US passenger airlines, and UA's internal goal for customer intent to repurchase is below 40% which they fail to meet.

UAL is a shell of it's former self. If you're a true unionist looking for a fight to restore pay and benefits and don't care if the place is "burned down"
in the process, I'd say go for it. Otherwise, don't waste your time.

Thanks for the input guys. Thats what I've been hearing from other people. I think I'm better off where I'm at ( 121 international freight hauler). I hope things work out for the people that are there.

Just my opinion, and I could be wrong, but I don't believe any airline the size of a UA will be allowed to go under. There are simply too many interested parties involved with too much at stake. Companies like UA in the non airline world would have been put out of their misery long ago by competition and free market forces, but those rules don't apply in our world. Time of course will tell all...

Yes, you are wrong. Pan Am and Eastern went under. The Govt will try almost everything, but in the end they could go under. I certainly hope it does not happen.

Pan Am was a shell of it's former self when it shut down (not sure about eastern).

It would be harder for the fed to allow UAL to suddenly go under because:

1) They are HUGE, the disruption would be massive.
2) With max loads system wide, nobody else could pick up the slack quickly.

More likely that they would slowly wither and die over a period of years.
