True,... I've even set 4 alarm clocks in the past.

Yes it is spot on.
Your post made me laugh. I now know better why I am having trouble "talk", thus I shall not take things personal

I'd say it was right on ecpect maybe for the healthy part. I have flown with some pretty big eagle capts. Most of them very good guys.

I'm trying to figure out what part of this article points to cause and what points to effect.

In other words, are they saying that this type of people are the kind driven to be pilots?

Or more importantly, is this the type of personality that is required to be a pilot?

I've seen plenty of people who were much different than the persona described...and they were usually poor aviators.

I set three alarm clocks for anything before 9am. I thought the article was pretty dead-on with the good and bad...

The Pilot Personality

Pilots are a distinct segment of the general population.

lol, so we're like special or something? *ooooh!* I think some guys actually do believe this.

In addition to flying skills, pilots are selected for their personalities and for a distinct "pilot persona." These characteristics make them safer pilots.

Pilots tend to be physically and mentally healthy.

yes I agree with some of the above posts, I have seen waaay many pilots with a huge gut. in fact, every single captain I've flown with so far except for ONE guy had a gut. (and these are young dudes! in their mid to late 20s). that being said, I do think that pilots in general are less fat than the general public.. the obesity rate for Americans is what.. like 30 or 50%?

They have difficulty trusting anyone to do the job as well as they can.

True!!!

Outside the cockpit, this quality shows up in the tendency of many pilots to set two or three alarm clocks-- even though he or she may generally wake up before any of the pilots go off.

I check my alarm like 5 times before I go to bed to make sure it's set correctly... and I always wake up naturally before it even rings. But I don't think that's because I'm suspicious or paranoid... it's because I'm so scared of oversleeping and missing my showtime!

Pilots tend to be intelligent but are typically not intellectually oriented.

I think the part about not being intellectually oriented can be true.

They like "toys"-- boats, cars, motorcycles, big watches, etc.

Well, that's because most pilots are men, and men in general have a thing for power tools, George Foreman grill, big and/or shiny and/or fast machinery. Not to be stereotypical or anything, because this article surely isn't!

They are good at taking things apart, if not putting them back together.

True again, because most pilots are males and boys in general are more inclined that way.

Pilots are bimodal: on/off, black/white, good/bad, safe/unsafe, regulations/non-regulations.

I think military pilots ESPECIALLY are that way. They are very black and white. In college I could always tell which professors were ex-navy because of this trait.

Pilots need excitement; a 9-to-5 job would drive most pilots to distraction.

True, I can't imagine life in a cubicle... but then again there is nothing exciting about cruise either.

Pilots are competitive, being driven by a need to achieve, and don't handle failure particularly well.

speaking of competitive, I remember back in the days when the guy that soloed first would be such a hotshot.. like if soloing at 10 hrs or 30 hours really made a difference, but everyone was so darn competitive about it!

Pilots avoid introspection and have difficulty revealing, expressing, or even recognizing their feelings. When they do experience unwanted feelings, they tend to mask them, sometimes with humor or even anger. Being unemotional helps pilots deal with crises, but can make them insensitive toward the feelings of others. The spouses and children of pilots frequently complain that the pilot has difficulty expressing complex human emotions toward them.

That's just men in general.
and I agree with 1seat1engine, I can't figure out if people with these qualities tend to pursue flying or these are desirable traits of a pilot. It seems more like the latter (for the most part.)

The ball and chain says it's dead accurate. She also says she's never wrong. Hmmmm.

Thank you guys!

I showed this article to THE pilot in my life, and he shrugged it off. That was before I posted it here.

Now I have to let him know that more than 15 pilots agreed with the article mostly

I may still get the same result as "the pilot has difficulty expressing complex human emotions..."

I don't know where I stand with this article. I'm a scientist and a very critical/analytical/logical thinker but I do have pretty complex emotions.
