I find that I flying more and more Redeyes, and though I don't mind them if that is all I am doing, the article is absolutly right on about screwing up a sleep schedule. It is especially tough, if like me you come home to a wife and 4 kids who are not up all night. There is nothing more painful then flying a redeye getting in a 6am then catching your commute home, finally getting in the door at 1pm, and then not be able to sleep because of the normal activies of your familly.
I am also seeing that we are starting to see more and more mixed flying, evening 24hr, redeye, 24hrs, morning, etc...talk about rough.
IF I have a comfy seat as a pax, especially when communting home from work, I actually enjoy them. It's quiet, most people sleep, very little noise or light in the cabin. My sleep mask, courtesy of B6 and my new iPod...Im all set on a redeye. Have yet to fly one. But I am kind of a night owl.

I hate them. The kind we do here at Alaska are the worst. It's bad enough flying West to East but pure West coast all nighters are worse. If you fly from West to East you typically take off around 10pm and land at 3am (West coast time). Now 3am is bad, but it is really just a late night. We've all done it. The problem with our ANC or FAI all nighters is we land at 6am local time.
We take off around 9pm land in ANC at 12:30am, CHANGE AIRCRAFT after a 2 hour break, take off at 2:30am and land at 6am. Brutal! The hours between 3am and 5am are the worst. You are cruising above the West coast of Alaska/Canada, it is very dark (nothing on the ground), it is very quiet on the radio, and it is very easy to fall asleep. I can only do one of these. Then I need 2 days to recover.
They are truly for a special breed.

We are doing some crazy all nighters now too. Doing all night turns! I would agree that doing the one leg east to west 24 hrs off then West to East is not to bad. But Leaving FLL at 11pm flying to Ponce and back to get in a 5am is not fun. We are also doing these to Santa Domingo, San Perdro Sula, Managua, and I am sure there are more. The other really bad one is the 2 legger from FLL to Guatamala City to LAX, and the Reverse!

That LAX-GUA-FLL is done as of next month.
I don't mind the turns at night, as long as they keep them like that in line. Keep the cycle. None of that late night show, time off, then early morning stuff. Also when I WAS based in DTW, loved the one leg out to LAS/LAX, or SFO, 24 off then home. Paid 12 hours for on top of that!!!(and if I picked it up out of open time, 18 hours!!!).
NOW LIMA, that is NOT fun at ALL!!! That took a lot out of me the other night/morning. Drooling the whole way home on the commute (BTW, thx as always NWA!!!)
Only did red-eyes as a reserve and I hated them. You are never able to sleep on the layover.. invariably someone is in the hall at the hotel be it housekeeping or whomever. And far too often housekeeping would be banging on the door asking what time you would check out, running the industrial strength vacuum cleaner into the walls...
Nope.. didn't enjoy red-eyes. Now retired and flying corp again, most of our departures are 0600 or 0700 which means a 0430-0500 get up...
Some of us out here do redeyes arrive at dawn, then later on that night go on to Europe. Red eyes ? ....my eyes have more red lines than a Rand McNally !!
If I'm flying accross the the NATS or PACOTS, I'd much rather do it at night. That way after coast out and on selcal I can see the screen of my PSP, I mean pages of the T.O., better. In the daytime I hate bein the guy getting cooked on one side and the other guy freezing or vice versa, especially flying west when the sun's up.
