Exactly. The only airline that I have seen go out with FC seats open and JS riders at the gate is AMR. For some reason they do not stick up in their FC section.
Maybe one of their guys can chime in and tell us why that is. I have had it happen to be over a half of a dozen times out of ATL, DFW, ORD and DEN.

Sun Country as well. Not their pilot's fault. Seems to be company policy

CAL is pretty much prohibited from putting JS'ers in FC. They have many FA's who will rat out a pilot in a heartbeat too. (not all, but quite a few)

I just do not get it, it is a seat. Just one of many that could be my or your way to work. Those guys need to change that. Sucks for them as much as it sucks for us.
And for pete's sake, if the agent gives you a seat in the back, you still need to check in up front! (See the thread in the regional forum.)
If you are at DL you need to tell that to your fellow pilots. You have a few guys that make all of you look bad. Some I think just don't know and some are just rude. Last week we had one who didn't check in, was rude to the flight attendant, and then didn't even thank us when he got off even though we looked right at him. His initials are PP and he commutes out of SAN.
Seems like CAL and AMR are suffering from that total disconnect between gate agents, F/As and pilots. At AMR it's always been an issue, however, I must say that most CAs I fly with tell the #1 F/A that the jumpseater will be sitting in First. It is almost never an issue when the CA gets involved. The main problem is that we have too many CAs that DON'T get involved.
Regarding a full coach cabin and seats open in First, I've never seen that where they leave jumpseaters behind. But it wouldn't surprise me in the least, knowing the way this company operates. I promise you it isn't for lack of trying, but right now in the midst of contract negotiations, jumpseating issues are pretty low on the priority list. In the meantime, 99% of us do what we can to accommodate you in a first class seat. But if the agents don't allow jumpseaters on board due to a full coach cabin, the only solution is for the CA to walk off the aircraft until it is fixed. We have quite a few of those but not enough.

I am truly embarrassed about it.

Trust me I understand, but yes, it happens and a lot. At least out of DFW and ATL. Every so often the agent will let a guy sit in FC.
As an ASA pilot who has been commuting for 20+ years I would like to state my appreciation for the DAL JS over the years. The DAL crews have been great, even putting DAL pilots on the FA JS so I could get the cockpit JS. I've even had those DAL pilots who commute out of BHM (where I commute out of) look out for me and try their best to get me on.
In return I will do my best for any DAL pilot desiring my JS, and other airlines as well. I'm on the 200 so often short legs w/ alternate is difficult to get anyone on, ASA pilots or others. But most of the ASA pilots do their best.

This policy changed with a recent FOM revision. Jumpseaters can be seated in first class IF all available coach seats are taken. This was a change from the previous coach only restriction.
I have noticed in the past several months there are captains who will use their authority as captains (i.e. growing a pair and taking back captain's authority) to move jumpseaters from coach into open first class seats "for reasons of safety and security."
