Default Laser Alert

Forwarded from another forum:

Two aircraft were illuminated by laser last night in PHL. Just a reminder that many airlines have specific procedures to follow in the event of laser illumination.

Do you yours? (please don't post them here, just an FYI that you might want to re-familiarize yourself).

It has recently been occuring in PHX also. Happened to me in December and has recently happened to others.

Very bright green laser. Surprisingly distracting. Even the passengers noticed.

One of my previous airlines had a "Unscheduled Laser Illumination Report" form you were supposed to fill out, in addition to a normal Incident report. Found out about it after I reported a Laser sighting and the company prompted me to fill out the additional report. And yeah, its BRIGHT. Resist the impulse and look away!

This ULIR form was forwarded to the FAA and NTSB. I'm pretty sure it's a mandatory reporting form for 121 carriers.

Does make one wonder if there is a "Scheduled Laser Illumination Report", eh?

A guy was doing this to us randomly on our late night flights into Santa Rosa because he was upset about the flight path over his house. Unlucky for him sheriffs dept helicopter was out and about and last I heard he will be doing some jail time.

wow, never thought this would be happening in the US. Overseas all the time. I was riding jumpseat in a C-17 out of Kuwait and we had to wear special "laser-proof" sunglasses when flying out so we didn't get lased on departure or arrival. But wow, didn't expect it here.

My flight school has had a few reports, we have to fill out our own paper work and notify the tower asap so that law enforcement can be called.

Same here, got an eye full while doing Touch an goes at KDKX.

There was a movie once, Something about bugs, had a quote that applies here.. a bug is flying towards a bug zapper and you here, "Dont look at the light!.... the bug replies, I cant help it" ZAP!.

I just got on TYS's tower and told them i had some joker pointing a lazer in my eyes, they took my position and said the authorities were being dispatched.

I have had it happen to me twice just north of DEN. I think it was right in the vicinity of Ft. Collins for those who fly out there frequently. We let ATC know and filled out a company report. Who knows what happens from there.....

I'd be surprised if they caught even half of the laser offenders. Seems hard to pinpoint the exact location of the source.

How large are the devices in question, anyway?
