I'm one of the 150 being furloughed and I take great offense to this comment! There are people being put on the street and the company is junior manning...that is poor! So Herk, go pick up your open time, pay your bills and enjoy being employed.
Agreed. I really enjoyed the green slip flying here at DAL when I was furloughed. I loved hearing the Captains justify a $12000 trip to Paris for double time while I was on year 1,2,3,4 then 5 of furlough. Glad they were able to afford a new boat.
Good luck to you while you are on furlough. I hope the CAL guys are at least paying your Cobra.
I dont understand how a pilot picking up open time is scum. We do it all the time in this business. Its unfortunate that guys are being let go, but the operation must continue. I think this is a little ridiculous that you are calling your fellow pilots scum for picking up open time, are you paying his/her bills? I dont think so.
Ok, imagine you are being put on the street by the company because they "don't have enough flying for you to perform." Then all of a sudden, they are now short on F/O's and they offer the remaining pilots (capts included who already make alot more than you) 150% of their pay to pick the flying that the company claims wasn't available for you. Wouldn't that get you a little upset? I don't think most people expect the company to care, but your fellow pilots should care knowing how they would feel if the shoe was on the other foot. Thats whats known as unity and what being apart of ALPA is supposed to be about.

I'd say it has more to do with the basic human decency than Alpa.
Point taken. Im just making the point that aside from just being courteous to people you work with, being in a national union implies that courtesy as more of a duty rather than "if you feel like it" or not.

ahhh........I think you are one the SCUMS if you are picking up OPEN time while there are furloughs. Every open time trip you pick up, there is less need for pilots below you, which also lowers your seniority and quality of life. But you probably don't understand that either. If you have to pick up time, do it from ADVERT not OPEN time.

There is enough advertised time to find what you need. Plus you will be helping someone else out instead of screwing me.

You appear to be a current or former mil pilot (like me).
This is not the military, where the "mission" must be continued at all costs. There is no "greater good" in the airline industry, only greedy execs who will manipulate you, and pit you against your fellow pilots to make more money. Don't be a wh0re.
We should be taking care of our fellow pilots first. Anyone who picks up overtime while guys are on the street is a scumbag. Management is not your friend, we should be trying to protect ourselves--NOT "the mission" which DOES NOT EXIST IN THIS INDUSTRY.
That's the way it is. If you can't handle that, go back (or stay) on active duty. But don't stay here and pollute the industry with your sense of "duty."
Look at it this way: Every two weeks, you get paid--and you and the company are "even." You are not "on the clock" 24-7 like you are in the military; know the contract and fly the contract. The end.

Nicely expressed. Bet he's not even a pilot. Probably a PFE for Lynx or the likes. No harm or foul ment to that company or PFE's, but the herc guy just doesn't get it.

Nice post, completely agree. Especially as I wait for a training date that I have no doubt won't be coming anytime soon. Glad I have the reserve backup...
