I was stationed there for 2 yrs in the Navy. Actually it stands for Give Us American Money. The Traditional Chamarro greeting of Hafa' Adai can be translated into half-a-day, which describes the pace of life and local work ethic, which given the heat and humidity is not surprising.
Plan on getting the "crud" for a month or two when you first get there until the flora and fauna in your GI catch up, but the plus is you can then eat with impunity in places like the PI and Egypt and not get sick
The flying around the islands is a hoot - GUM will usually be your alternate, comms are HF and uncontrolled ops with a lot of use of cruise clearances.
If layovers are at any of the out islands it's like another world. Makes SPN look like Manhattan.
Hopefully it will include the beach market to NRT as well and it would be a sweet deal, especially if its PS from a CONUS domicile, but to actually move and live out there - if you are unencumbered and adventurous - maybe. It would be the definition of commute from hell. Think of it as a disassociated overseas assignment.
They are pretty good about being around for scheduled service at the out islands, but if you were mil there were times we waited all day for a fueler to show up, despite PPR and coordination, and then they might be topless local woman in grass skirts chewing Betelnut (Yap). On some of the islands we got smart and had the coordinates of the airport manager and would circle his house a few times and got in the habit of bringing fresh San Miguel from Cubi and then the service improved immensely.
Best thing to do there IMO is get off island and Scuba dive. If you are partial to efficiency and organization you'll go crazy. Would be a big help to be retired or Reserve mil and have access to those facilities.
