Let's say you are starting a period of five days on call. You could be given short call the first day, long call the second day, then short call again the third day. No hard and fast rules.....other than the limit of 8 short calls per month.
Having said that, typically, you will either be on short call or flying. Staffing in all the categories is pretty tight.
An X day is a day off. Days off can be X days or star days. Basically, an X day is a day off they can violate if they need too. Say you have two days left on call and a three day trip pops up. Scheduling could give give you the three day trip (assuming they have exhausted all other options) and move your day off if its an X say. A star day cannot be violated......an important point when you are bidding to get Christmas or Thanksgiving off!
When reserve lines are built, and for now they are built the old fashion way vs PBS for line holders, there are all kinds of lines. Typically you will have three or four days off inbetween on call periods.
