Default Non-Rev with refundable ticket as back-up

I will be taking my fiancé on our honeymoon to HNL this summer out of PDX on Hawaiian. She hates flying alone and wants me to buy a positive space ticket and not “chance it” trying to jumpseat (especially since it is our honeymoon!) . My question is could I buy two one-way fully refundable tickets for me(One there and on back) as a back up. Then the day of the flight, talk to the ticket counter and if the flight loads are good, just jumpseat and grab a seat in the back with the Mrs., but if the loads are looking tight than just check in like a normal passenger and cash in my ticket. Would that work??? Can I jumpseat having purchased a refundable ticket and get my money back if I do not use the “ticket.” I am guessing I need two on-way tickets since if I buy a round trip and do not use the first portion than the return portion is void.

Also, could I do the same thing with my wife with an ID90. Get her an ID90, then if there are no standby seats just have her cash in her fully refundable ticket too?

Thanks guys!

Not on the same carrier. If you hold a positive space ticket on the same flight that you try to nonrev on (or even the same carrier on the same day) you may never be able to nonrev on that carrier again. Its your honeymoon dude...man up and buy a ticket.

Yeah, unless you have an extra CIA-issued false identity they will catch you on that when two reservations show up.

Yeah definitely don't buy a ticket and try and jumpseat, that's usually a violation of the rules. But I wouldn't worry too much about jumpseating. I did this for my honeymoon, paid ticket for the wife and jumpeat for me to Kona. Loads were bad, but both times got a seat in the back. One time in first, and the other time a seat right beside hers. Besides I doubt there's many commuters to HNL out of PDX, and the HA 767 should have 2 jumpseats, just get there early! Save that extra $700 and use it to do some cool things on the island, right now that will go a long way!

I understand money is tight now...and I know your trying to save money...But always think of the worst...If you dont get on, your new Wife will be alone on her honeymoon...A happy Wife = a Happy Life....BUY a ticket. It only happens once (well...hopefully)

From 15 years of marriage, buy and ticket and avoid the long-term hassles...if you know what I mean!

I'm more of a risk taker when it comes to commuting/non-reving. If you dont make it on that flight you will have time to make a connection through SEA/SFO/LAX down there. So, worst case your a few hours behind her. If she is marrying a pilot she should get used to these situations..

At my carrier, if you non-rev in any capacity after having a purchased ticket for the route and date in question it is a direct violation of policy. Not worth possibly losing a job over.
