Probably right. Look for a non-cash, stock only deal.

There's no reason to get hung up on fleet commonality. What if they were to buy an airline with established markets, loyal customers, valuable slots, but no airplanes at all? Midwest Airlines has 9 717s, but they're going away as soon as Boeing says so. The subcontracted 170s aren't able to do the job of the 717s they replaced. If their owners don't have a plan, they would probably be willing to sell at a loss, in order to prevent a total loss. They could probably do it for stock.

I'm afraid this would not bode well for the Midwest crews.

SWA started service in MDW in 1985, long before the 1991 deal between Midway and NWA.

Southwest Airlines to Buy Most Assets of ATA Airlines
Written by Sunrise on KGMB9 - sunrise@kgmb9.com

Southwest Airlines now has bankruptcy court approval to buy most assets of the defunct ATA Airlines for less than $8 million.
Southwest is NOT, however, expect to make any attempt to resume Hawaii service. Its own jets are not rated for long trips over open water so transpacific service would be a significant cost factor.
