Bidding $170 million for bankrupt Frontier Airlines will give Southwest Airlines the chance to grow its Denver operations quickly, CEO Gary Kelly said.
Speaking Wednesday at the 12th annual Transportation and Infrastructure Summit in Irving, Kelly said his company has a "superior" bid as Southwest executives spent the day making presentations to Frontier and its creditors at a bankruptcy hearing in New York. An auction is set for today.
And while Kelly is confident of Southwest’s bid, he said he will not close the deal unless the two airlines’ unions can come to an agreement.
"The culture at Southwest Airlines is just too important," he said. "You see examples around the country where airlines have acquired other airlines and then left it up to the unions to fight it out over a period of years. We’re not going to do that."
Kelly also said Denver is Southwest’s fastest-growing market and has been profitable.
